I remember seeing Barbara as a student in an assembly in my high school gymnasium in 1989. Her slides were gruesome but impactful. Her delivery was matter-of-fact but cautionary. "He survived. [click] She didn't. [click] He spent 4 years learning to walk again..." The fact that I still remember her name from that one 45 minute assembly 36 years ago is a testament to her impact. It was horrifying and real, but the message sure got through to those carefree teenagers in the audience.
I know Barbara probably saved many lives among my schoolmates that day, and thousands of lives over her lifetime. We are lucky to have been touched by such a special and selfless person. I'm stunned to hear of her loss and send my deepest condolences and appreciation to her family.
