Barbara Joan Burgin Dunk's Obituary
January 17, 1938 – October 11, 2013 DUNK, BARBARA JOAN BURGIN died peacefully in her home with her family by her side on October 11, 2013 after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born January 17, 1938, in Houston and later settled with her family in Junction, TX at age 6. “Bobbie”, as she was affectionately called by her parents, was a dancer and performer from an early age. Barbara performed for the USO, taught dance in her garage, was a twirler/majorette, and named FFA Cowgirl Sweetheart. Barbara graduated from Junction High School in 1956. She attended San Angelo College and received her BA from North Texas State University in 1960. Barbara spent several summers studying dance in New York. She directed and choreographed many shows both during and after college. On August 29, 1962 she married Harold Dunk, also of Junction. Barbara & Harold lived in Houston where she owned dance studios before they moved to Dallas in 1967. She embraced her role as a full-time wife and mom and was very involved at Greenhill School with her children’s activities. She also found herself back in the dance studio in Dallas, both teaching and taking classes with her daughter. Barbara continued to entertain and make others smile — whether planning a party or costume, decorating for every holiday, or sharing her favorite singing animal toys with friends. The world was a stage to her. Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Helen and Noble “Kirk” Burgin. She is survived by her husband, Harold; daughter, Dee Velvin and son-in-law, Trey; son, Kirk Dunk and daughter-in-law, Angie; 6 grandchildren, Andrew, Sarah Kay, and Will Velvin; Lily, George, and Oliver Dunk; and many more loving family members and dear friends. A Memorial Service will held Thursday, October 17 at 10:30 AM at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, 9200 Inwood Rd (@ NW Hwy) In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Barbara Dunk to Lovers Lane UMC Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
