Barbara was COO – Chief Operating Officer, of their home and she did it masterfully; first for George, then for her daughters, her Son-in-Laws, and later at “Camp Grandma” for her Grandchildren. Barbara believed we are all children of God and she served tirelessly. She was an active member of Waterview Church of Christ from 1973-1992.
In 1992 Barbara and George retired from Dallas to Sulphur Springs, Texas. For the next 20 years they enjoyed many friendships at League Street Church of Christ, Sulphur Springs Country Club & their neighborhood. They traveled to Russia, The Bahamas & Kuai as missionaries sharing God’s message of love, forgiveness and eternal life. Barbara & George were celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary in England when the 9/11/2001 tragedy occurred. They experienced gracious hospitality and genuine respect for Americans. Barbara and George enjoyed traveling to all parts of the US to spend time with family and friends, but her favorite was Kuai. She frequently said, “If it weren’t for our Grandkids, we’d just move there.” She enjoyed playing golf, pinochle, dominoes, sewing, reading, music and art. Barbara made family holidays and birthdays exceptional with food, personalized Christmas stockings and her signature cakes: “Billie White Fudge Cake” and “Merks Coffee Cakes”.
Barbara was passionate about getting to know people; whether it was in line at the grocery store, welcoming a visitor at church, helping at her children’s and grandchildren’s school, sports or church events or sharing her love with a person who had come to the “Clothing Room” (which she started) at League Street Church of Christ.
In 2012 Barbara (& George) returned to Dallas for the best possible health care & to be close to their TX family on a daily basis. The Team at Allen Christian Care has provided excellent care & love. If Barbara could, she would thank you all, with her joy filled smile, for your love & constant care! Thanks be to God for Barbara’s life!
