Barnard Perry Dietz's Obituary
Barnard Perry Dietz, petroleum geologist and former Vice President of Texas Oil & Gas Corp, died July 4 of complications from pneumonia. He was 93.Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, July 27 at 3 p.m. at Restland Funeral Home, Dallas. The family will receive visitors from 2 to 3 p.m. on July 27 at the Funeral Home’s Abbey Chapel. Interment at Restland Cemetery will follow the 3 o’clock funeral service.Barnard was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 22, 1925, to Dr. Irving Dietz and wife Anna (Pollock) Dietz. He attended Corpus Christi schools and graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1942. In 1944 Barnard dropped out of college to join the Navy and served in the Philippine Islands until the end of World War II.At the end of WWII, Barnard joined Republic Natural Gas Company of Dallas. He later returned to college and received a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Texas in 1953. In 1958 he joined Texas Oil & Gas Corp (formerly Tex-Star) and worked as a district geologist in the Corpus Christi office. In 1967 he moved to TXO corporate headquarters in Dallas where he served as Vice President and Chief Geologist until his retirement in 1986. In 1992, Barnard was honored by his oil industry colleagues with creation of the Barnard P.Dietz Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Rock Mechanics at the College of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin.Barnard was affiliated with several industry organizations including Corpus Christi Geological Society, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and Dallas Petroleum Club. Recently, the Corpus Christi Geological Society published several articles written by Barnard about his early career and development of the oil and gas industry in South Texas. He was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church.Barnard is preceded in death by his parents and wife Mary Lou (Warren) Dietz. He is also predeceased by his four brothers and their wives: Irving, Jr. {Murrel), Robert (Helen) Dietz, Henry Dietz, and John (Marilyn) Dietz. Barnard leaves the following family to mourn his passing: wife, Sue Johnson-Dietz; five sons Mark Dietz and wife Sally of Dallas; David Dietz of Lewisville; Bruce Dietz of Dallas; John Dietz and wife Julie of Raleigh, N.C., and Todd Johnson and wife Shelley of Lucas, TX. He leaves eleven grandchildren: Khyle Morgan of College Station; Jonathan Dietz of Dallas; Barret Dietz of College Station; Austin Dietz of New York City; Lauren Dietz of Raleigh, NC; Christina Dietz of Austin; Jeffrey Dietz of Dallas; Emily Johnson of Addison, TX; Caroline Johnson of Lucas, TX; Max Fryer of Malibu, CA and Alex Fryer of Dallas. Six great grandchildren survive: Cayson Morgan, Keaton Morgan, Bowman Dietz, Banks Dietz all of College Station, and Hudson Dietz and Sterling Dietz of Dallas. In addition, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.The family wishes to thank all those who supported and helped Barnard through his final illness.
