Beaufer Nell "Sally" Farr (Cates)'s Obituary
Beaufer Nell “Sally” Farr (Cates), November 5th, 1931 – December 12th, 2019.She was born in Delta County, TX, during the years of the depression. During her pre-teen and teenage years, her parents were working in a number of jobs to provide for their daughter – cleaning laundry and traveling around East Texas performing gospel music on various radio programs. In her mid-teens, the family settled in Cooper Texas where she attended Cooper High School and played trombone in the High School Band. Her father established a service station and was the fire chief for Cooper Texas.Upon graduating high school, she left for the Dallas Business School and worked as a secretary to pay her way. It was not too long after, she met Richard Farr while at St. John’s Methodist Church. They were married in October of 1954 by Brother T. Herbert Minga in Perkins Chapel at SMU. He was in the U.S. Air Force and their life of adventure began. From 1954 to 1972, The family traveled throughout the country and to Europe as is expected in the military (Panama City FL, Hutchison KS, Bartlesville OK, Dallas TX, Houston TX, Minot ND, Wiesbaden Germany, Sherman TX, Midwest City OK, and finally back to Dallas TX). She was constantly busy – managing four rambunctious boys and the household during this time… The family finally settled in Dallas in 1972 when Richard retired from the U.S. Air Force. With the boys getting older and less dependent on her time, she found a position working for the Dallas County Veterans Administration – something she thoroughly enjoyed – working for Lt. Colonel Stoney Greene. From the time that she started her adventure with ‘her Knight’, it was always exciting and interesting. She made life long friends from the start and participated with various church, women’s, and local activity groups in support of a number of causes..Her life is a testament in service to faith, family, and friends. Her trust in the Lord, devotion to her family, and loyalty to her life long friends allowed her soul to shine every day. She was a rare and beautiful daughter, wife, mother, grand/great grandmother, and friend whose voice and touch is truly & dearly missed, but her spirit will be with us – always…Daughter of Paul J. Cates and Zelma Hazel Cates passed away in Presbyterian Hospital on Thursday afternoon after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard L. Farr-Maj.
