Ben Jack Marlar's Obituary
MARLAR, BEN JACK was born in Cumby, Texas on December 19th, 1933 during The Great Depression and passed away on April 10, 2014 in Richardson, Texas. He was known to family and friends as Sonny, Sonny Boy or Son. His family moved to Dallas, Texas after WW11 broke out. Ben graduated from W. H. Adamson in 1953. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1962. Ben often said that Elvis took his spot in the Army when he left. Ben married Nelda Floyd on March 1st, 1956 while in the service. He worked for The Manhattan Shirt Company, Pacific Motor Transportation Company for 25 years and later worked at the University of Texas at Dallas in the central store for 15 years until he retired in 2003. Ben has numerous hobbies and interest. He painted landscapes as well as designed and made latch hook rugs. He loved coin collecting, geneology, puzzles and watching his western television shows and especially NCIS. Ben loved all sports and shared that love with his daughters. Ben and Nelda traveled the US with their daughters and later the world from East Texas to Alaska to Ireland to the French coast of Normandie. He learned to keep his bags packed because he never knew when Nelda had planned a trip. Ben never met a stranger and loved talking to them. His biggest joy was telling you about his wife, daughters and their families. Preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Birdie Marlar; sisters, Helen Slaughter and Lou Vrla. Ben is survived by Nelda Marlar, wife of 58 years; daughters and sons-in-law, Belinda & William Satchell of Allen, TX, Terri and Rick Bates of Heath, TX and Jill and Brian Casstevens of Allen, TX; five grandchildren , Joshua Satchell of Lubbock, TX, Katy and Kevin Bates of Heath, TX and Allison and Melissa Casstevens of Allen, TX ; niece, Kathy Slaughter Barlow along with numerous friends and relatives. Family will receive friends and family on April 12th, 2014 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Restland Funeral Home – Wildwood Chapel. Services will be held on April 12th, 2014 at 12:30 PM also at the Wildwood Chapel. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Association or the SPCA.
