Dr. Benjamin Christopher Watts' Obituary
Dr. B.C. Watts, resident of Presbyterian Village North, survived by son, Ben C. Watts, Jr., brother E.J. Watts of Palestine, TX, brother Dr. Woodrow Watts of Palestine, TX. Preceded in death by wife Annie Bell Watts. Born at Denson Springs, TX, November 7, 1904. Graduated from High School at Grapeland, TX. College degrees included Bachelor of Science, Sam Houston State Teachers College, now Sam Houston State University; Master of Science from Texas A&M and PhD Colorado State College of Education now Northern Colorado University. Additional graduate study completed at the University of Maryland. Retired member of the faculties of The University of Texas at Austin and Southern Methodist University. Professional experience included sixteen years in public school teaching and administration followed by thirty years of College and University teaching and administration. At the College and University level his primary interest was classroom teaching rather than in administration. Member of the U.S. Naval Ready Reserve for twenty years. Served on active duty for forty months during World War II. Attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Assignments were Instructor in Navigation, U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipman’s School, Columbia University. Executive Officer Navy V-12 Unit Texas Christian University and Commanding Officer Mississippi College. Member Park Cities Baptist Church. Served as a member of the Fellowship of Deacons at several Baptist churches. Taught Men’s Sunday School class at the First Baptist Church of Dallas for several years. Member of the Retired Faculty Staff Association of the University of Texas at Austin. Life member of Phi Delta Kappa, National Education Association, American Association and Curriculum Development, Texas State Teachers Association. Listed in Who’s Who in Education and in Leaders in Education and in Leaders in Education. Interests other than those related to his profession were travel, photography, home design, fishing and gardening. Funeral Service Restland Wildwood Chapel, January 7, 2010 with Dr. Jack Martin, Minister of Pastoral Services, Park Cities Baptist Church officiating. Interment in Trinity Gardens, Restland.
