Bennie Burroughs' Obituary
Burroughs, Bennie James Beasley ~ Died peacefully November 3, 2010 in her home in Mesquite, Texas. She is preceded in death by husband, Prince. Her passing was eased by the presence of family members and friends. Bennie was born in Georgetown, Mississippi, June 26, 1922. While attending LSU in 1943 she met Prince Burroughs at the Baton Rouge USO where he spotted her and told the nearest woman, “If you’ll introduce me to that girl, I’m going to marry her.” Little did he know that the woman he was speaking to was her mother. Six weeks later Bennie and Prince were married, and eventually spent most of their 57-year marriage in Texas, first in Dallas where they were faithful members of Wesley Methodist Church and then Tyler Street United Methodist Church, and later in Mesquite where they found a church home at New World United Methodist Church. Bennie’s love of color and design was evident in her home, her gardens, and her art. In addition to painting porcelain and oils, she was an award-winning quilter with quilts featured in national magazines and an art calendar. Bennie is survived by her daughters, Cherry Werner and Patti Barricklow and Pattis’s husband Sam, granddaughters Amy Edwards and Paula McCurdy, grandsons Douglas, James and Scott Barricklow, and great-grandchildren John McCurdy and Hatlyn Barricklow. The circle of her love embraced more friends and family than can be named, and her home was a haven of peace to all who knew and loved her. Services will be at 10:00 am Saturday, November 6, at Restland Cemetery in the Wildwood Chapel, officiated by Bennie’s dear friend, the Rev. Marilyn Dickson. Visitation will begin one half hour earlier. There will also be a visitation Friday, November 5, 6-8:00 pm. Bennie always asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the scholarship named for her parents at Centenary College of Louisiana: Reverend and Mrs. James L. Beasley Endowed Scholarship Fund, Louisiana; Office of Development, Centenary College of Louisiana, P.O. Box 41188, Shreveport, LA 71134-1188. “Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality.” – Emily Dickinson
