Bernard "Bernie" Peter Best's Obituary
Bernard "Bernie" Peter Best, 86, of Plano, passed away in the early morning on September 28, 2021. Bernie was born in the Bronx, New York on February 2, 1935, just 15 minutes before his twin brother, David, to Thomas Fredrick Best and Susan Walsh Best. The family moved to the Washington DC area when Bernie was about 5 years old. When Bernie was in the 8th grade, he met the love of his life, Shirley Stump. Bernie and Shirley married in 1956 and raised four children.
Bernie had various jobs in his lifetime. He was an accountant who worked as an office manager at several different companies. Bernie was an avid bowler and he enjoyed sports. He was a lifelong Washington football fan and he spent many hours watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. Bernie read the paper cover to cover daily and was able to converse and argue about any topic. However, his favorite pastime was playing poker and visiting Choctaw.
For many years, Bernie was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Richardson. He enjoyed the Men's Club and reading Scripture and serving communion on Sunday mornings. He also performed in an occasional play.
Bernie had quick wit and a sarcastic sense of humor. If you ever met him, you would never forget him! He was well known at his assisted living facility, where he would tease and joke with residents and employees and keep them laughing. He did not know a stranger and he will be missed by those who knew him.
Bernie is survived by his children: Kathy (Wayne) Herbrich, Kelly (Cliff) Schubert, Tom Best, and Michael Best. Grandchildren: Shelley Herbrich, Zachary (Brooke) Herbrich, Ryan (Andrea) Schubert, Austin Schubert, Carson Schubert, Billy (Ashley) Best, Blake (Delaney) Best, Brittany Best, Maverick Best, and Henry Best. Great-grandson: Wade Herbrich. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Norma Best and Peggy Johnston, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Best, his brother Fred Best, and his twin brother, David Best, who passed away earlier this year.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021 in the Wildwood Chapel at 2:00pm, 13005 Greenville Dr., Dallas, Texas 75243. Bernie will then be laid to rest at Restland Memorial Park.
