I am one of MANY nieces to my Aunt Bettie!! My favorite memory of my Aunt Bettie occurred when I was a senior in college, majoring in Apparel Design. A group of my classmates went to the Dallas Apparel Mart for seminars, interviews and industry representative sessions. We were staying with a classmates sister, but I called my Aunt Bettie & she soon had the address where I was staying & was on her way to pick me up to come eat dinner with her at their house & spend the night! We stayed up late talking (imagine THAT…2 Swart girls staying up to TALK!) and the next morning she made me a european breakfast, on her beautiful dishes from Germany & coffee. She drove me CLEAR across Dallas to the apparel mart that morning for the morning sessions…going so out of her way for me. That next summer, she had me make her a "sloper" which is a master block pattern that she could take to her dressmaker/designer in Dallas. Her confidence in me was very encouraging….we formed a special bond working on that perfect fit. I will always be inspired by her involvement in her church, the giving nature in all the years she helped the nursing home ladies by styling their hair and in the comfortable nature of being around her & my Uncle Allen. Much love to their beautiful family. I will miss Aunt Bettie & wish we were celebrating her 90th birthday this summer…but am reassured & encouraged at the vision of her in heaven with her family, 9 brothers & sisters who were waiting for her! I can only imagine her greeting Aunt Dorothy & Uncle Ernie after losing them in WW2 when she was in her late teens, a hard time to lose a big brother & sister. All my love, Lori Swart Sporer, Oakley, KS.
