Betty Lee Overstreet's Obituary
Betty Lee Willison Overstreet passed away peacefully at Medical Center of Plano on August 24, 2016 at the age of 85. She is survived by her children, Bobby Overstreet of Plano and Leanne Fondren of McKinney, and her grandchildren Gregory Fondren, his wife Katheryn Fondren of Little Elm, Rebecca Fondren of New York City, New York, and Kathryn Fondren of Cleveland, Ohio. She has two great-grandchildren, Lilian Betty Fondren and James David Fondren of Little Elm. She is preceded in death by her husband Gene Overstreet of Plano. Betty was born December 29, 1930 in Oklahoma City to Lawrence Willison and Daisy Julian Willison. Betty was the younger of two children and was lovingly referred to as ‘Babe’. Betty later moved to Bonham, Texas to live with her aunt and uncle, Hazel and Bob Barrow. She graduated from Bonham High School, class of ’48 and was an active member of the First Christian Church of Bonham. It was in Bonham, Texas that she met and married Gene Overstreet on December 10, 1949. Betty and Gene were married 57 years until his death in 2006. Betty and Gene moved to Plano, Texas in 1963. Betty worked for the Plano Independent School District for 30 years where she first served as a HeadStart reading teacher at Mendenhall Elementary School and later transitioned to PISD’s nursing staff. Many describe Betty as a brilliant woman. She had a special practicality and forthrightness. She never shied away from truth and honesty. She valued her ability to think critically in any situation. Betty also balanced that intensity with an appreciation for the lighter side of life and she could find the humor in any situation. She had an infectious laughter and loved a good joke. Betty was an extraordinary person and had various interests throughout her life. She loved to swim and taught swimming for many years and was an avid bridge player. She was a die-hard Dallas Mavericks fan. Betty loved music and she loved to dance. After she and Gene retired, they enjoyed traveling in their mini-van and took extensive road trips. It was during one of these trips that she discovered ‘the most beautiful place on earth’, Lake Louise in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. But her biggest loves were her family, her friendships, her books, and her music. And as she often stated, with these things “I am content”. Memorial service will be held August 31, 2016 at 3:00PM at Restland Funeral Home in the Wildwood Chapel.
