Betty Wenzel's Obituary
Betty Ella Wenzel, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 17, 2024, in Dallas at the age of 92, after a long illness. She was married to the love of her life, John Warren Wenzel, for 69 years. She is survived by her husband John, of Garland, and their four children: Becky Gore, of Richardson; Barbara Wenzel, of Garland; Jim Wenzel, of Dripping Springs; and Judy Woolley, of Houston.
All those who knew Betty knew her to be a remarkably kind, giving, and caring person. She had a naturally cheerful disposition, a positive outlook, and liked to laugh. She tried to help those around her feel welcome and a little bit happier.
Betty was born in 1932 in Nutley, New Jersey, to Albert and Rebecca Luscombe. Betty grew up in Nutley with her parents and her younger brother, Paul Luscombe, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Hood College in Maryland with a degree in psychology. Betty then married John, a native of Pittsburgh, in 1955 and they set off on their life journey together.
John and Betty brought their first child, Becky, into the world while they were living in Huntington, West Virginia. Barbara, Jim, and Judy were born while the family was living in Columbus, Ohio. When John’s job took the family to Peoria, Illinois, Betty worked part-time as a secretary at the First United Methodist Church, and she was active in the church there. The family then moved to Dallas in 1974 and subsequently to Houston in 1978, where Betty worked as an executive secretary at Borden. After John retired from U.S. Steel, she and John moved to Siesta Key, Florida, to enjoy their retirement by the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. They were active in the Sarasota Audubon Society and traveled extensively.
John and Betty moved back to Texas in recent years to be near their daughters and grandchildren in the Dallas area. Betty was blessed with 6 grandchildren: Justin Mooneyham, Katelyn Mooneyham, Paige Friesing, Drew Friesing, Jamie Woolley, and Jalynn Woolley.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held on December 7, 2024, at 2:00 PM in the Wildwood Chapel at Restland Cemetery in Dallas.
