Bev… Aunt Bev to us, was cherished by our family for many reasons! As the last remaining member of our parent’s generation, she was the connection with all those in our family that went before. She was cherished because she helped fill-in the memories, the names, the places and the events that connected us to that generation.
Aunt Bev was cherished for her wit, her wisdom and her involvement in causes important to her. How many can claim, well into their eighties, that they regularly had their Letter to the Editor published in Dallas’ largest newspaper. She never failed to vote or express her opinions on those she supported, or opposed for office. She would have been excited to hear that Beto was considering a run for Governor!
Aunt Bev was cherished for her love of education, especially reading, and especially if the book was a period romance novel! She introduced many of us to her favorite books and authors and sometimes she passed along a book she thought we might enjoy. She continually encouraged those in our family who became teachers.
She was cherished the last few years for her unbridled enthusiasm for the latest Netflix, HBO or Starz mini- series, especially if it was a period romance series. She and my wife Robyn compared notes after every episode of “Outlander”! A couple of years ago, she said her greatest desire was to live long enough to finally see the last season of “Game of Thrones” She never missed a chance to express her displeasure at all things Circe Lanisster, or her love of all things Jon Snow.
Lastly, she was cherished for her love of family. The last time we saw Aunt Bev was at a family event in July. She came with Julie and Rick on a Saturday morning to an outdoor, drive-by baby shower honoring the newest member of our family, our grandson Finn. Of course, Julie had decorated their car and Aunt Bev proudly rode shotgun in the front seat. We had a chance to visit awhile, them in the car, us on the sidewalk. As they were about to leave, we asked Aunt Bev how she was spending the rest of her day, thinking she would be heading back to the assisted living facility she called home. Oh, she said, “we’re going back to Julie and Rick’s house to eat pizza, drink martinis, and binge watch “The Mandelorian”. Of course she did!!
