Condolences to Billie's family members. I was in tears on the train when I heard about Billie san leaving us here on earth. When Billie san came to Kamakura and Yokohama , she and I had time on the road in my car, taking her through Yokohama. We had a very nice time talking in the car. She was very kind to us and we enjoyed the conversations with her. We miss her dearly. Yoichi Sakuma
Am sending condolences to John, Randy and all of Billie's family. Our family moved next door to the Hertz family in April, 1969 and remained neighbors until I sold our home in October, 2008. During those years Billie and I became good friends and shared many outings to nurseries as she enjoyed her plantings and was always willing to help me with my gardening selections—most especially I remember we each purchased our Japanese Yew trees and then compared how each was acclimating to our soils and locations in the corner of the yard we selected. On another outing we purchased large lava rocks to carve for a special bird bath, which proved to be more than I could accomplish, but it had a special place in my front flower bed anyway! We also enjoyed some other projects like applying a colorful paper border in her spare room. After selling our home and moving back to West Texas, I was only able to visit with Billie a few times when I returned to Dallas for brief visits, but hold all these special memories and pray that you each hold special memories of this special lady. Dear Hertz family, Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. My families hearts are with you and your family. Billie has been part of my life since birth. Mom used to tell me that she took care of me when I was a baby (I was the easy one compared to my brother Yoichi according to Billie). Billie was at my first wedding in Japan (which did not last unfortunately). When I called Billie years later to tell her I was remarrying and that the wedding was going to be in Hawaii, she told me, "Please make this your last wedding, I'm getting too old to travel everywhere!" We both laughed and I continue to tell that story to my friends. Billie was always worried about my parents in Japan over her own health. She used to worry about my mom's driving and was relieved when I told her that my mom no longer drove. She was always interested in how my dad's projects were going. Always asked how my sister Yuki and my brother Yoichi were doing. Billie surely loved Japan! She was always excited to tell me about how she was showing her friends the old pictures. I am fortunate to have one of her lovely paintings of the bamboos, which sits in my living room. Billie will be missed. Thank you for being part of my life. Love, Miki
