Billie Lee Hughes-Whitney's Obituary
Billie Lee Hughes-Whitney passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at the age of 86 from natural causes, surrounded by her family. A native Texan, she was born on May 1, 1936 in Harlingen, Texas to Ida Clementine (Stephens) and Charles Whitney and has lived in Houston, Texas; Moses Lake, Washington; and Dallas, Texas, her final home and resting place.
Volunteering her time to help others was Billie’s greatest purpose with many hours dedicated to the Girl Scouts, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and all of the chaos associated with being a cheerleading, drill team, theater, and sorority mom. In addition to the many hours volunteering for her family, Billie gave to her community as a poll worker for numerous elections ensuring that voters could exercise their right to vote no matter if it was a local, state or national election. Later in life, Billie was able to pursue her passion for ballroom dance with a group of fellow enthusiasts at the Dance Masters of Dallas studio. With several trophies and ribbons, Billie cherished the friendships made and the laughter shared during her dancing days.
Billie always had a soft spot for her “four-legged children” and other “two-legged children,” mostly in the form of dogs but also with gerbils, hamsters, and birds. Her family rests easy with the knowledge that Casper, Snuggles, Tootsie, Tweety, Aspen, and many others are able to be with her again for treats, walks, and cuddles.
Billie is survived by her daughters and their families – Peggy Shriver, son-in-law Ron Shriver, and grandson Christopher Berg; and Ronda Wang, son-in-law Andrew Wang, and grandson Kaelan Wang. She is also survived by her four brothers and their spouses – Steve and Janey Thompson, Frank Thompson and Deb Dixon, Oscar and Liz Thompson, Bobby and Jan Thompson, and by her former husband and father of her two daughters, Ron Hughes.
She is also survived by dear friends who have been a tremendous support in recent years: Bill and Kathy Williams; Becky and Darrell Fuller, and Linda Rogers.
Billie was preceded in death by her mother and father, sister Dora Kay Molder (Thompson), and brother Joe Thompson.
Billie will be remembered for her strong will and compassion for others, and it is this quality that her family embraces in memory of their mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and wife.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Restland Funeral Home & Cemetery, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243.
