Billy Smithey's Obituary
Billy Smithey of Garland, Texas passed away Sunday morning, January 10, 2010. He was born on September 23, 1928 in Wolfe City, Texas to Fielding and Mabel Smithey. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean; his children, Stan Smithey of Garland, Texas; Steve Smithey of Rockwall, Texas; Billy Smithey, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Lake Worth, Texas; and Jan Hahn and her husband, Jim of Waco Texas; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; Dora Caldwell of Wolfe City, Texas; Ardina Butler and her husband, Jack of Wolfe City, Texas; Sue McAdams of Arlington, Texas; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Billy served in the Army Air Corps having been stationed in Greenland and Brookley AFB in Mobile, Alabama. After he left the armed forces he returned to Texas to farm in Wolfe City. He moved to Dallas in 1951. He was a hardworking man spending years at Dossett Cleaners but the majority of his years were spent working for Borden’s Dairy as a home delivery milkman. Being one of the last home delivery milkmen brought him some celebrity. He was featured on the front page of the Dallas Morning News, on CNN’s “American Moment with James Earl Jones,” and his uniform shirt shown in the Borden’s display at the Smithsonian. After retiring, he worked as a crossing guard in the Garland School system and at Restland Funeral Home as a greeter for five years. His quick smile and gentle spirit made him loved by many and he will be greatly missed by all those he touched and served. Visitation will be on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Restland Funeral Home from 6:00 -8:00 PM . Funeral services will be on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 10:00 AM at the Saturn Road Church of Christ, 3030 Saturn Road, Garland, Texas, 75041.
