Brigadier General, Thomas C. Nelson (ret)'s Obituary
NELSON, THOMAS CLARKE passed away January 11, 2013. General Nelson was born into a military family at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii on January 15, 1932. In March of 1952, he enlisted in the Army, went to Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a second Lieutenant of artillery in March of 1953. In 1956, he received a bachelor’s degree from MIT and a Master of Science degree in 1963 from the University of Arizona. He received a commission in the Regular Army Signal Corps in 1958 and retired from military service in 1984. In 1958 he married Charlotte Lundy and they were married for 51 years with four children and five grandchildren. General Nelson served many tours of duty including the 82d Airborne Division, 1st Cavalry Division in Korea, Army Headquarters in Washington DC, Command and General Staff College, 1st Calvary Division in VietNam, 63rd Signal Battalion in Vietnam, command of the 35th Signal Group at Ft. Bragg NC, Chief of Staff at Ft. Gordon GA., Defense Communications Agency, NATO military headquarters in Belgium, and the Army Communications-Electronics Command in Ft. Monmouth, NJ. While in the Army he received the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star and Air Medals. After retirement from the military, Tom and Charlotte moved to Dallas, Texas. Tom worked for Rockwell International and H&R Block. Our fondest memories of our father and grandfather are those times we spent together as a family whether it was on the tennis court, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay, playing bridge or gathering around the dining table for a meal and a fine bottle of wine. General Nelson is preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, daughter, Katharine Cooper, sister, Alexa Plantz and grandson, Alex Davis. He is survived by his children, Tom Nelson, Eric Nelson and Nancy Davis, and his grandchildren, Laura Nelson, Sean Davis, Rachel Nelson, and Megan Nelson. Service will be held Monday, January 28, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Restland Wildwood Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association , PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 and The American Cancer Society, PO Box 560089, Dallas, TX 75356. Services will be held on January, at National Cemetery.
