Bruce Roy Miller was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on November 17, 1941, to his parents, Walter Sheldon and Willie Lovey Miller. He and his brothers were raised on a family dairy farm in Luther, Oklahoma. After his father passed away, Bruce took over running the farm at just 16 years old, learning the value of hard work and responsibility at an early age. Farming remained at the heart of who he was and became the work to which he returned for the rest of his life.
Bruce graduated from high school in 1959 and married Sylvia Kay Hickey in Bethany, Oklahoma, on August 16, 1963. Together they shared 39 years of marriage and raised their two daughters, Tami and Tiffani. After Bruce was laid off from his factory job, he borrowed his brother's lawn mower and began mowing lawns to make ends meet. What began as mowing lawns grew into a landscaping business and eventually a thriving nursery. In 1975, Bruce and Sylvia moved with their daughters to Edgewood, Texas, where they purchased the land that would remain his beloved farm and home for the rest of his life. When asked recently why he farmed, he laughed and said, "I had to make a living." And make a living he did. For over 50 years, Bruce Miller Nursery has provided flowers, trees, shrubs, and plants to generations of Texans.
Those who had the honor to know Bruce know that he was witty, loyal, stubborn, and unbelievably generous. Without thinking twice, he would give the shirt off his back to any person or pet in need. His farm became a place of retreat to countless family members, friends, lost dogs, stray cats, hunters, fisherman, and farm workers. Bruce found joy in the simple things: woodworking in his workshop, shooting guns with his family, sitting on his front porch while smoking meats, watching Westerns in his favorite recliner, driving kids around the land on four-wheelers, and spending mornings on a fishing boat with his grandkids and sons-in-law. Bruce will always be remembered for his biting humor, hardworking attitude, but most of all, his immense love for others.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sheldon and Willie Lovey, and by his brothers, Walt, Floyd, and Lloyd. Bruce is survived by his daughters, Tami Stallings and Tiffani Bayouth; his son-in-law Alex; and his son-in-law Steve, who has worked alongside Bruce in the nursery for more than 30 years. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Ally and Brandon Hemphill, Annie Stallings, Lexi Stallings, Jake Bayouth, and Caroline Bayouth, as well as his great-grandchildren, Henry and Collins Hemphill. When reflecting on his life, Bruce often said that it was his family and grandchildren that he was most proud of.
Bruce will also be remembered by countless friends, neighbors, customers, and others whom he treated and viewed as family. He will be deeply missed by so many who have loved him throughout his life, and his family looks forward to reuniting with him for eternity.
