Calvin Varnell Barnard's Obituary
Calvin Varnell Barnard
February 10, 1937 – February 17, 2025
Calvin Varnell Barnard, 88, of Garland, TX, passed away peacefully at his home on February 17, 2025. Born on February 10, 1937, in Waco, TX, Calvin lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and an unwavering love for his family and friends.
Calvin proudly served in the Texas National Guard before beginning a distinguished career in law enforcement. He joined the Texas Highway Patrol as a Highway Patrolman, later earning a promotion to Sergeant. After 15 years, he transitioned to the Dallas Sheriff's Department, where he led the training program, shaping the next generation of law enforcement officers. Eventually, Calvin left law enforcement to become a partner in a successful business, which he ran until his passing.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Calvin’s greatest passion was his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he married his high school sweetheart, Catherine Garrett, on August 3, 1956. Together, they built a home full of love, laughter, and open doors. Calvin coached both his son’s and daughter’s sports teams, mentoring countless young people along the way. He chaperoned band trips, welcomed his children’s friends into their home, and made time for everyone who crossed his path.
Calvin never met a stranger. His larger-than-life personality and generous heart earned him lifelong friendships wherever he went. Later in life, he found joy in teaching CHL and armed guard classes, where he made even more lasting connections. When he became a grandfather, he poured the same energy and dedication into his grandkids, ensuring they felt as supported and loved as their parents had.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hansford Varnell Barnard; his mother, Ida Pauling; and his brother, Bobby Barnard. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 68 years, Catherine Barnard; his son, Jeff Barnard; his daughter, Patty Johnson and Husband Doug; his grandson, Cody Johnson; and his granddaughter, Brandi Barnard. His loss leaves a deep void, but his impact and legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.
The visitation for Calvin is scheduled for Friday, March 14th from 6pm-8pm At Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas TX.
His service is Saturday, March 15th, 2pm at the Wildwood Chapel at Restland.
