Carol Harris Brown's Obituary
Carol Harris Brown passed away at age 96 on July 10, 2024 in Murphy TX.
She was born December 25, 1927 in Big Spring, TX, to Russell M and Lora Lucille Harris. She married Douglas Brown on June 2, 1949, and lived in Grand Prairie, TX, until 1955 when the family moved to Garland, TX. Carol was active as a regular church and community volunteer. She served as Cub Scout Den Mother and active Boy Scout parent. Her gift of hospitality was displayed best through a home-cooked meal and fellowship around a table. She frequently provided the Boy Scout leaders with campout food, especially desserts. Carol inherited her father’s love of playing games such as Bridge, Canasta, Spades and Yahtzee, and, later on, Uno and Bingo.
Carol was a dedicated homemaker for most of her life. Her greatest joy was her family. She and her husband, Doug, were active members of Grace Methodist Church in Dallas for many years. She told stories of friends and ministries from Grace into her final weeks of life. She loved to give gifts, big and small. She enjoyed everything about cooking – kitchen gadgets, family recipes, trying new recipes, and cooking meals for large family gatherings. She was in Garden Club for many years and enjoyed working in the yard into her 80’s. Her family has flowering plants that were propagated from Carol’s childhood home. Her grandchildren have fond memories of collecting pecans in her yard and helping shell them. We always had access to delicious pecans from her yard. Christmas was her favorite holiday, as it was also her birthday. She enjoyed needlepoint as a hobby for many years, and her family has several of her favorite pieces to remember her by. Family heirlooms and the stories to go with them were special to her. Many hours were spent with her explaining which things came from whom and a story to go along with it. Carol’s favorite companion pet was a cat – she told many stories about beloved Charlie. Ethel was her furry companion in recent years, and they had a special bond. An unexpected joy in Carol’s life was her ability to be actively involved in the lives of her 5 great grandchildren. She attended recitals, school performances, and ballgames into the Fall of 2023. We love and miss her very much.
Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Douglas Brown, Jr of Murphy, TX and Alan Brown of Spring, TX. Carol is also survived by her grandchildren Lauren Britton and husband, Stan of Heath TX, Shelley Otero and husband, Matthew of Plano TX, and Denise, Adam and Aaron Brown of Spring. She was proud great-grandmother to Noah Colin Andrew Luke and Hannah Britton of Heath, TX.
The family gives special thanks to the staff of Lynridge Assisted Living and Trinity Hospice. A graveside service will be held Friday July 19 at 9AM at Restland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or to the charity of your choice in Carol’s honor.
