Dr. Cary Jake Lambert's Obituary
LAMBERT M.D., CARY JAKE, Dr. Cary Jake Lambert, known to his family and friends as Jake, was a distinguished surgeon, loving husband and father, dedicated friend, mentor, and a patron of the arts. He was committed to medical innovation and to surgical training. Born March 30, 1930- Deceased July 3, 2007. Jake was the first born of four children from the marriage of Fannie Logan Scott and Samuel Joseph Lambert of Brodnax, Virginia where he was reared. He was president of his high school class and graduated from Lawrenceville High School in 1947. He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a BA in Chemistry with honors in 1951. Jake pursued a career in medicine and graduated with his MD degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia on May 31, 1955. Dr. Lambert completed a rotating internship in 1957 and began general surgery residency under Dr. Champ Lyons at the Jefferson Hillman/University of Alabama Hospital and Medical School in Birmingham. He completed his general surgery training in the Regular US Army Corps at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He served as a general medical officer at Ft. Sam Houston. He then served as Chief of Surgery at Bad Kreuznach, Germany; Vicenza, Italy; and Fort Polk, Louisiana. He received an honorable discharge after achieving the rank of Major. Dr. Lambert continued his medical training by completing a Thoracic Surgical Residency at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas in 1967 under Drs. Watts R. Webb and Robert R. Shaw. He also completed a Vascular Surgical Fellowship under Drs. Ken Hempel and Gene Wheeler in 1969. Dr. Lambert joined the practice of Dr. Ben Mitchell and Dr. Maurice Adams in 1969. This group later added Dr. Gerry Geisler and Dr. Peter Thiele. Jake practiced in Dallas for the next 27 years with privileges at Baylor Medical Center, St. Paul’s Hospital, Childrens’ Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital, Medical City, and RHD Memorial Hospital. He directed the cardiothoracic fellowship for this group, training numerous surgeons in cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery. During his Dallas practice, he researched and contributed to many areas in his field. Dr. Harold C. Urschel, Jr., writing about the history of cardiothoracic surgical services at Baylor University Medical Center in 2003 noted, “Dr. Cary [Jake] Lambert established many new techniques for tissue preservation and pioneered the use of heterografts for valve replacement.” He collaborated with Dr. Alan Marengo-Rowe to study the problem of post-operative bleeding in cardiac and vascular surgery. He placed the first intra-aortic balloon pump in Dallas. He designed several vascular surgical instruments, most notably the Lambert-Kay Vascular clamp which is commonly used for performing open heart surgery. He authored numerous publications and scientific articles. He wrote a chapter for Champ Lyons: Surgeon by Martin L. Dalton published in 2003. Dr. Lambert was board certified in General and Thoracic Surgery. He was the member of numerous medical societies including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgical Society, American Association of Thoracic Surgeons, Dallas County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, Society of Vascular Surgeons, and the Texas Surgical Society. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Cardiology, and American College of Chest Physicians. He married Beverly Jean Fuller on September 12, 1961 in Basel, Switzerland. They were married 43 years prior to her death in 2005. During their marriage, they enjoyed patronizing the arts including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Opera, and the Dallas Symphony. Dr. Lambert was preceded in death by his sister, Alice Hart Smith. He is survived by three children–Beatrice Lambert Craddock and Dr. Cary Jake Lambert, Jr. from his marriage to Beatrice Ruth Blackman; and Lisa Laura Lambert, Esquire, from his marriage to Beverly. His grandchildren include Cary Marie Lambert, Cameron James Lambert, and Daniel Jake Craddock. He is also survived by two brothers-Armistead Gorrell Lambert(Sylvia) of South Hill, Virginia and Samuel Joseph Lambert, Jr.(Joyce) of Brodnax, Virginia as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
