Catherine Ann Hivick Dunlap's Obituary
DUNLAP, CATHERINE ANN HIVICK was born November 5, 1912, to May Donnelly and Lawrence C. Hivick in Wichita Falls, Texas. As an only child, she spent her early years in Wichita Falls because her father was in the oil business working in the Burk Burnett field. They later moved to Oklahoma City where they lived in the Scurvin Hotel until purchasing a lovely home on 14th Street. In 1928, Catherine Ann attended Camp Waldemar, Hunt, Texas, when the camp was only in its fourth year, thus a family tradition was born. Both of her daughters and both grand-daughters attended this popular camp, which continues today. In 1930, Catherine Ann entered Gulf Park College in Gulf Port, Mississippi, and returned to Oklahoma to complete her education at Oklahoma University where she played tennis and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma . While in Oklahoma City, she met Rusty Dunlap and they were married in 1937. Rusty worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone which required family moves, first to Sedalia, Missouri, where daughter, Kay was born in 1939 and daughter, Susie in 1941. The moves continued to St. Louis and finally to Dallas in 1944, only to be moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1951. Catherine Ann made her first antique purchase while living in St. Louis, a pair of barber bottles. Home-sick for Dallas, the family returned to Dallas where Catherine Ann enjoyed golf, tennis, bridge, church work, the girls’ school activities and antiquing. It was at church where she met Dorothy Killingsworth, who became her antique business partner. They opened Goblets, Etc. Antiques in the mid-1950’s. The first shop opened on Sale Street, then they moved to Snider Plaza and, after Dorothy’s death, Catherine Ann moved to a second Snider Plaza location where she remained in business until past her 100th birthday. The Goblets team made three buying trips to England each year. Buying antiques anywhere was her passion. Antiquing put a smile on her face and a spring in her step as long as she lived. It is believed that Catherine Ann was the oldest active antique dealer in the country. She was a long standing member of the Dallas Glass Club which she thoroughly enjoyed. The Dallas Glass Club honored Catherine Ann on the event of her 100th birthday. Many friends have remarke about how they will never forget her mentoring, her teaching, her positive outlook, and her endless energy. Others tell about how she willingly shared her knowledge, was so generous with her time and also with her possessions. This grand dame of antiquing will be missed by many. Her beautiful, happy presence has left us, but her love and appreciation of beautiful things will remain with all whom she encountered. Memorial service for Catherine Ann will be held Saturday, September 13, 2014 at 2:00 PM at The Trinity Episcopal Church, 12727 Hillcrest, Dallas, Texas with a reception at the church following the service. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75238.
