Catherine Mary Carpenter Johnson, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Born on March 13, 1938, Catherine was one of twins born to William and Myrtle Burge.
Catherine had a natural gift for gardening, finding joy and beauty in nurturing growing things. She graciously shared these talents with others through her church, where she served as a volunteer wedding coordinator, thoughtfully designing and arranging floral displays that reflected both care and creativity. Her eye for detail and love of beauty helped transform special occasions into meaningful and memorable celebrations. Catherine was deeply faithful and very involved in her church community.
Catherine’s first marriage was to O.B. Carpenter, who passed suddenly in 2000. He had three children. Five years later, on December 10, 2005, she married Clellan V. Johnson, who had four adult children: Michael Johnson, David Johnson, Susan Fey, and Carolyn King.
Catherine adored animals, and her compassion for them was evident in both small and memorable ways. On one occasion, she and her husband discovered an abandoned newborn squirrel and lovingly cared for it until it was strong enough to be released. The little squirrel returned often to visit them, a testament to the gentle care it had received. Because only one eye was open when they first found him, they named him “Popeye,” affectionately calling him “Poppy” for short.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 2nd, at 1:00 PM at Restland Funeral Home.
