Catherine D. Pell's Obituary
Catherine D. Pell, 71, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Cathy’s family will gather for visitation on Sunday, July 5, 2015 at Restland Funeral Home from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. A service celebrating Cathy’s life will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, July 6, 2015 at Lake Highlands United Methodist Church in Dallas Texas. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park. Cathy was born on May 14, 1944 in Corpus Christi, Texas to the late Leonard and Josephine Shoemaker. She spent her childhood years in Baytown, Texas and graduated from Baytown High School. She attended the University of Houston where she earned an undergraduate degree in teaching. She also attended the University of Miami where she earned a Master’s in Education and in 2004 she also earned a Master’s in Youth and Family Counseling from Amberton University. After her graduation from the University of Houston she taught school in South Texas and Central America. While living in Philadelphia in the early 1970’s she even worked as a security guard at the University and at the Bubble Yum factory where she became proficient at escaping bees. Cathy moved to Dallas in 1984 and began teaching at DISD. She taught ESL at JS Hogg in Oak Cliff and Hexter elementary in East Dallas. She taught with DISD for over 20 years until she retired. She also taught adult English class at the local community college. After her retirement as a teacher from DISD she began a second career as a family counselor with DISD. She retired from this position in 2014. Cathy touched many lives throughout her life. She was led by God to help others whenever and wherever she could. She was often the hostess to many new friends at holiday times around her table so that they would have family to be with. She was always willing to open her home to those who needed it. She had a wry sense of humor and a willingness to share the pieces of trivia that she learned throughout her life. Cathy was a devoted friend who could be counted on to be there when anyone needed her. She loved playing bridge with her friends, bird watching, and playing games with her family. Cathy leaves behind, her brothers, Leonard and Nathan Shoemaker, her children, Tracy Pell and her fiancé, Timothy, of Dallas, Susannah Pell Turner and her husband Rick of Columbus, OH, and Andy Pell and his wife, Melanie, of Dallas; her grandchildren, Marissa Hickman, Dani Hickman, Lissie Hickman, Maya Turner, Wyatt Turner, Ethan Pell, and Macy Pell; along with a host of other loving family and friends. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243. In lieu of flowers, the Pell Family requests memorial donations to be made to Lake Highlands United Methodist Church – The New Room, 10061 Whitehurst Drive, Suite 100, Dallas, Texas 75243 or 9015 Plano Road, Dallas, Texas 75238.
