Catherine E. Smith's Obituary
Smith, Catherine Estelle (Bewley) Passed peacefully from this world to the next in Austin, Texas on January 8, 2011 at the age of 90. She was born on August 31, 1920 in Frisco, Texas to Silas and Nettie Bewley, as one of seven children. Catherine was also affectionately known as Cathy, Reenie, Meemaw and Mother to her many friends and family members. She grew up on a farm near Frisco. Her children and grandchildren were amazed to hear that she often rode a horse to school, and that she had no electricity until she moved to McKinney after high school graduation. She worked there as a dental hygienist, before meeting her husband-to-be, Lloyd “Happy” Smith. Reenie and Happy ran off to Oklahoma to get married on January 20, 1942 right before he rejoined the Navy. While Happy was in the Pacific during World War II, Reenie worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” in a fighter aircraft plant. After the war, she devoted her time to being a loving wife and mother. Catherine taught Sunday school classes, was a lifelong gardener, and loved travel so much she visited all fifty states, Mexico, Canada and Europe. She was a member of Lakeland Baptist Church of Lewisville for over 30 years. She is survived by her son, Dick Smith, and wife Margie Smith; her daughter, Sandi Sain, and husband, Lonnie Dillard; granddaughter Angela McClure, and husband Mark McClure; grandson Derek Smith, and wife Susie Smith; great-grandchildren Meredith McClure, Chandler McClure, Jacob Smith, and Carson Smith; brother, Dick Bewley; sister-in-law Lorene Smith; and many nieces and nephews. Family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 on January 12th at Restland Funeral Home; 13005 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX. Memorial services will be held in the Wildwood Chapel at Restland on January 13th at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to a church or charity of your choice.
