Celia Louise Cain's Obituary
CAIN, CELIA, was born March 29, 1925 to E. Lee and Charlotte Tucker and passed away on May 9, 2008. She grew up in Texarkana, Texas, and graduated from Texas High, where she was known as ‘Sweety’ to her friends for her happy and kind disposition. She attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri from 1941 to 1943, and then graduated from SMU with a B.A. in Art in 1945. It was at SMU where she became a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. After graduation she worked in Dallas for Sun Oil and Neiman-Marcus. She met her husband Byron W. Cain on a blind date and they were married on June 18, 1949. They lived in Dallas except for a five year period in Youngstown, Ohio, 1957-62, where her husband was transferred for his career in the steel and oil business. After moving back to Dallas, she and Byron were members of the local Great Books Club, the longest running club of that society in the country, in which they formed many lasting friendships. She enjoyed her activity in her garden clubs, including the Dallas Garden Club and the Garden Study Club. She was an active member of the Calliope Club (serving as President 1991-92), the Dallas Woman’s Club and the Northwood and Dallas Country Clubs. Celia was a loving and strong supporter of her husband in his professional and social positions, and was popular with her large circle of friends for her bubbly and sparkly disposition. She loved going to the circus and collecting circus memorabilia. Celia pursued collecting dolls in her travels with her husband and her collection is now on display at the National Doll Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. She delighted in music, and was a lifelong devotee of the NY Metropolitan and Dallas opera companies, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Dallas Wind Symphony. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, her daughter Celia Ann Cain, and her two older sisters Betty Lee and Charlotte Jean. Her survivors include her daughter Melinda Cain, and son Byron W. Cain, Jr., his wife Nancy, and her adored grandson Jeremy, all of Dallas. A lifelong Methodist, Celia was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church, where the Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13. The family will welcome friends and family at a visitation to be held at Restland Cemetery, Monday, May 12 from 4:00 ‘ 6:00 p.m. Memorials should be made to The Dallas Opera, 8350 North Central Expressway, Suite 210, LB I-II, Dallas, TX 75206.
