Charlene DeLoyes Miller's Obituary
Charlene DeLoyes Miller
Born in Dallas Texas, July 18, 1928
Heaven for eternity, April 23, 2023
A long life well lived in devotion to caring for others because “Christ first cared for me” was how Mom, Grandma Too, and Dad’s sweetheart will forever be remembered. What started out so promising as the first child to Loyes Legrande Kindred and Rubye Louise Tillery; he the youngest to reach vice president of the Dallas Federal Reserve and she a beautifully kind and caring young loving mother, quickly became totally dependent on God’s gentle yet firm grip when mom lost her dad at age 3 and then being thrust into a grownup world helping her mother in any way possible navigate through the great depression era. When others might have yielded to cynicism or despair, through God’s grace Charlene’s heart only grew larger. She called East Dallas, Lakewood and Swiss Avenue home at various times in childhood and young adulthood, then graduated from Woodrow Wilson high school in 1946 where she had met and married her life’s love, H. H. “Buddy“ Miller. Before starting a family, she pursued her double major degree in communications and foreign language at Texas Woman's University.
Together they had an ideal marriage -- full of love, passion and fun. With her good friends, they took trips throughout all of North America and Mexico before settling down in the “new” North Dallas area near Lovers Lane and Abrams Road where they lived for over 30 years. Together they brought into this world, loved and nurtured four children, Diane, Russ, Jim and Kyle, who blessed them with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made raising kids look easy, always finding the right balance of freedom and protection, discipline and leniency, achievement and fun, but always with love in her eyes and heart. Making each day count for something special included playing bridge with her friends, numerous book clubs, visiting all Presidential Libraries, being PTA mom, or enjoying long weekend trips to the “Manor”, a lake house sanctuary where family members could escape the noise of business and crowds and see God’s presence and beauty in nature. She always made each family member feel special and planned to the minor detail wonderful trips of interest for each of her children; gatherings were always special with all holidays and birthdays a true celebration and feast for all the senses.
Mother was a charter member of Ridgewood Park United Methodist Church where she began and enjoyed lifelong friendships and serving the needs of countless families throughout East Dallas. She was an avid volunteer and took seriously her role as standing board member of the Texas Mental Health Association. She had a soft spot for new charities getting off the ground and always contributed generously as a founding member to numerous East Dallas and White Rock Lake organizations and to the Meadows Museum-SMU.
We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the angels who walk among us at Monticello West Assisted Living and Holding Hands Hospice who took care of so much for so long when she was unable.
Mother is now free from the grips of dementia and clearly sees the reality of her Savior’s embrace. Her life began and ended totally dependent on Christ and in between she was the graceful loving role model of love, resilience and service to others.
She is preceded in death by: her mother, Rubye Tillery; father, Loyes Kindred; brother, Marshall Kindred; sister, Melva Jean; husband, Buddy Miller; daughter, Diane Marshall; and son, Jim Miller.
Charlene Miller is survived by: her son, Russell and wife Joy; her son Kyle and wife Dawn; her grandchildren Asher, Blake, Haley, Natalie, Hudson and wife Sarah, and Chase; her son-in-law Dusty and wife Kaye Marshall; her daughter-in-law, Susan Miller; and her great-grandchildren Holden and Hogan.
