Charles Herman Hammett's Obituary
Charles Hammett met his Lord in Paradise on July 6, 2016 after a long and courageous fight with several health issues. Raised in Tyler Texas, Charles developed a love for football, which never waned. Upon graduating from high school he was accepted into Southern Methodist University where he was so proud to play ball for the Mustangs on a scholarship. When WWII broke out, Charles became an officer in the United States Marine Corp where he proudly served in the Pacific Theatre. He later served on the frontline in the Korean Conflict. Upon graduating from SMU with a business degree, Charles went to work for Humble Oil and remained with the company until his retirement in 1981. In 1946, while working in a department store, Charles met the love of his life, Jeanne and on April 5, 1947, the two were married. To make their family complete, Hank was adopted in 1956, followed by Holly 2 years later. Charles had a great love of painting. In 1953 he inquired about taking lessons, but he was not able to do because the art teacher would only teach women. Being a very determined man, Charles picked up a canvas and a set of paints and taught himself the art of oil painting. It was a love he enjoyed the rest of his life and he took joy in painting landscapes and portraits for his family and friends. There were certain characteristics that everyone who met Charlie noticed. He had a keen sense of humor with a very quick wit; he could make anyone chuckle. He had the sweetest smile and his eyes always had a twinkle to them. He would light up a room the moment he entered. He was slow to anger yet rich in kindness. He was truly a gentle man. To meet him was to love him. Charles loved the Lord with all his heart and his family takes comfort in knowing that he is in the arms of his savior, Jesus Christ. Charles in survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanne Hammett; his son Hank Hammett and partner Dale Dietert, his daughter Holly Mortimer, his granddaughter and her husband, Lindsey and Connor Achord, his brother and his wife, Hunter and Patsy Hammett, his brother-in-law Jim Myers, and many close friends who he considered to be family. He was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Ann Myers, and his son-in-law, Craig Mortimer. A very special thank you to the entire staff of 3 North at The Plaza at Edgemere for the amazing love and compassion they showed to our Daddy! In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The National Kidney Foundation. A private graveside service will be held. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted into Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243.
