Charles Richard Smith's Obituary
LT. (J.G.) US Navy, retired, Charles Richard Smith, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 13, 2023 at Genevieve’s Royal House in West Plano, TX. at the extreme old age of 103. Charles and his wife, Roseann Julian Smith, who pre-deceased him by 22 years were avid golfers, and frequently accompanied groups from his church, First Baptist Church in Richardson, on singing trips with the Goldenaires, and water-skiing trips to Lake Brownwood to teach skiing to the church youth. Charles and his son, Chuck, would also go dove hunting in the Richardson area when the town was less populated.
In his military career, he was a naval aviator and instructed many prospective airmen to fly single engine aircraft into battle. Lieutenant Smith also flew supply missions to Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Philippines.
After retiring in 1945, Charles was employed at Southwest Airmotive near Love field in Dallas. He was employed as an office manager for Buckner & Son, a commercial builder, and later as an office manager for J.P. Pittman, a general contractor who built many residential homes in the Richardson area.
Mr. Charles Richard Smith, otherwise known as CR by some and as Smitty by his military buddies, but more affectionately known as Peepaw, was born September 24, 1920 to Charles Grady Smith and Ophie Chick Smith of Richardson. He went to be with Jesus on October 13, 2023.
Mr. Smith is survived by his loving son, Charles J. (Chuck) Smith and wife, Kathy Smith, of Wylie, TX.; loving grandson, Jason
Smith, and wife Kari Smith of Richardson, TX.; loving granddaughter Jennifer Foster and husband Kyle Foster of Desoto, TX.; loving grandson, Nathan Washington and wife Tracy Washington of Midway, Utah; loving granddaughter, Natalie Coonrod and husband Michael Coonrod of Melissa, Texas.
Mr. Smith is also survived by many loving great-grandchildren; Tristan Washington of St. Joseph, Missouri; Madeline Garcia of Venus, TX.; Jessica Washington, Emma Washington, and Axel Avery of Midway, Utah; Elijah Coonrod and Jaxson Coonrod of Melissa, TX.; Genevieve Smith of Richardson, TX.; Jacqueline Ortega; great-great grandchildren, Kyla and Kinsley Washington of St. Joseph, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service is provided by Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery. The family requests donations be made in Charles Smith’s memory to the First Baptist Church of Richardson, Texas.
Pallbearers are Nathan Washington, Jason Smith, Michael Coonrod, Elijah Coonrod, Marc Dolton, and Ryan Crawley.
The family also wishes to thank all the caregivers who assisted Charles, including Eunice Aidoo, the owner and RN of Genevieve’s Royal House where he lived until God called him to Heaven.
