Charles Newton Warren's Obituary
Charles Newton Warren (Charlie) age 76, of Dallas, Texas passed away Friday, January 5th, 2018 after a long and courageous struggle with ALS. He was born on June 5th, 1941 to Harold Newton Warren and Melba Taylor Warren and lived in the family hometown of Burleson, Texas until 8th grade. At that time, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, and Charlie graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio.In 1963, Charlie graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelors of Arts in History. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Charlie then studied law at the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with honors in the top 5% of his class, was an associate editor of the Texas Law Review, a Quiz-master, and was elected to Chancellors.On the first day of law school, Charlie met a fellow law student, Jeanne Maurer, and fell in love. They were married in January 1966 after graduating from law school. Over 52 years they built a strong and loving family with 3 children.Charlie’s distinguished legal and professional career is marked by the many friends and relationships he developed. Charlie began his legal career in April of 1966 as an associate of Fulbright & Jaworski in Houston where his practice emphasized federal income and state taxation. In April 1972, Charlie became an associate and later a partner of Meyers, Miller, Middleton, Weiner, and Warren in Dallas, and its predecessor firm, where he had a general business practice emphasizing real estate and federal income taxation. In January 1981, Charlie became a partner of Jones Day in Dallas with a general business practice emphasizing real estate. In October 1996, he became Senior Vice President and General Counsel of his client D. R. Horton, Inc., a national home-builder. In July 1999, Charlie entered into private practice and became Of Counsel to Jordan, Lewis & Warren, PLLC in Dallas. In March 2003, Charlie and his son John founded the Warren Law Firm, PLLC in Dallas, and he worked there until his retirement in June 2015.Charlie delighted in being a world traveler, but his greatest passion was his family and cherished friends. He was an active member of Class, Etc. at First United Methodist Church and a dedicated member of the Cooper Aerobics Center where he enjoyed working out with friends. Charlie and Jeanne helped their daughter Elle to establish a thriving bridal boutique and their son John to form The Warren Law Firm. Charlie considered these two of his greatest accomplishments in life. Charlie was a man of undying loyalty, superior judgement and impeccable character. He sparked life into any and all gatherings. He was the best example of what it means to be a good father and loving husband.Charlie is preceded in death by his father, mother and his step mother, Gladys Warren. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 52 years Jeanne Maurer Warren, son John Newton Warren and wife Kim Warren, son Charles Taylor Warren and wife Erika Warren, and daughter Elle Warren Harman and husband Brent Harman. Charlie’s grandchildren are Catherine Ellen Warren, Cole Roy Warren, Murdock (Doc) Warren Harman, Ainsley Gant Harman and Walker McKay Harman. Also surviving is Charlie’s brother, Robert Warren and his wife Patricia Warren, his sister Priscilla Warren and her wife Megan Mills, and brother’s in law Joe Maurer and Robert Maurer. Charlie is also survived by the beloved matriarch of his mother’s family, Genevieve Taylor Harris, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Presiding at the graveside service will be Reverend Dale Pogue accompanied by his wife Ann Maurer Pogue.If desired, donations can be made to the ALS Association Texas Chapter by visiting their website at www.alstexas.org or by mail to ALS Association Texas Chapter, 5830 Granite Parkway, #100-320, Plano, Texas, 75204.Visitation will be held Thursday, January 11th at Restland Funeral Home from 5 to 7 pm. There will be a private burial in Burleson, Texas on Friday, January 12th at 2 pm. A memorial service to celebrate Charlie’s life will be held at First United Methodist Church at 1928 Ross Avenue, Dallas, Texas on Saturday, January 13th at 2 pm. A reception will follow at the church. There is complimentary parking available in the Bryan Tower garage.
