Charlie Alexander McGill's Obituary
Charlie McGill, cherished patriarch, mentor, and friend, died peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2014. He was 95. Born in Birmingham, AL, Charlie was the first in his family to graduate high school. After serving his country in the Army in WWII, he was the first in his family to graduate college when he earned an engineering degree from Georgia Tech. Having been told by his father that he should be lucky to marry a woman smarter than he, he was lucky, indeed, twice. He was married to Virginia McLaury for 45 years, and to Joy Peck McKinley for 21 years, both of whom he said filled the bill. Charlie was an engineer, business owner, devout Christian and active Churchman, would-be farmer, and tinkerer first class. It seemed he could build anything, repair anything, improve anything. In all his life, however, his greatest joy came to him through those whom he loved and who loved him. Indeed, he excelled at being loved and respected for the man of integrity and faith that he was. Those who knew him consider themselves fortunate for having done so. Charlie was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia; second wife, Joy; son John Alexander McGill and his wife Patricia Tompkins McGill; and daughter-in-law, Vivian Taylor McGill. He is survived by son Robert C. McGill and his wife Nancy of League City, TX; son James C. McGill and his wife Beth of Houston, TX; daughter Betsy McGill Stephenson and her husband John of Round Mountain, TX; son Stephen R. McGill and his wife Kathy of Denver, CO; step-daughter Diana Woods and her husband Michael of Mount Vernon, TX; and, step-daughter Margaret Moore and her husband Chuck of Dallas, TX. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends, all of whom have looked upon him with love and respect and great admiration. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. The visitation for Charlie McGill will be from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 3:00 PM at Restland Memorial Park. The memorial service for Charlie McGill will be held at 3:00 PM on October 3, 2014, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Cypress Mill, TX” Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75238.
