Charlie Jack Phillips' Obituary
Charlie Jack “Hemlock” Phillips, age 83, passed away on June 4, 2019 after a courageous battle with a rare brain tumor and liver failure. He was born in Gladewater, Texas on August 8, 1935 to Charlie Roston and Ruthie Mae Phillips. A lifelong Texan, he is survived by Norma “The Jewel” Fallwell, his enduring friend and companion of 65 years, as well as his many remaining friends. Jack was a 32nd degree Mason, of both the York and Scottish Rite branches, and a member of the 705 Lodge in Oak Cliff. He acknowledged that duty requires sacrifice over self-interest, and practiced earnestness and sincerity. He graduated from W.H. Adamson High School in Oak Cliff and attended North Texas State College in Denton. His military service included the Texas National Guard 49th Armored Division. Jack’s most vivid personal accomplishments were associated with racing and shooting. The racing endeavors netted him 215 trophies, and he won NHRA National Championship Drag Racing in 3 different classes in his career. In the shooting area, Jack started in IPSI with 45 automatics, rifles, and shotguns. When the hardware got too exotic, he joined the Single Action Shooting Society in 1990, and became a life member with status of Territorial Governor of Texas with with badge number 384. He won the SASS Texas Championship an unparalleled 5 times. Jack’s professional career revolved around the automotive and truck industries. Starting in the used car business with his Dad, he transitioned to road jobs selling automotive chemicals and engine rebuilding. By 1972, he settled in on heavy trucks and proceeded to gain the insight which distinguished him in the profession. He worked for the Ford Motor Company Heavy Truck Division, and remained as Director of Remarketing for Associates Commercial Corporation after the Associates was acquired by Ford. The business was later acquired by Citigroup, and Jack achieved the position of Vice President of the Asset Management Group until his retirement until his retirement in 2004 at the age of 70. He was a prestigious member of the Truck Blue Book Advisory Board, which sets annual truck prices for this classic national handbook.Jack was a member of the East Mountain Baptist Church of Gladewater.Funeral Service for Jack will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Restland Abbey Chapel. Honorary Pallbearers are Wayne Calvert, Alan Calvert, Harvey Gough, Francis Studer, Max Faircloth, Gilbert Crouch, Ben Griffin, Bill Malone, Richard Miller and David Yancey
