Clarence Rex Stultz's Obituary
STULTZ, CLARENCE REX was born in Garland, TX, on August 17, 1920, and died February 25, 2012. Rex is survived by his wife, soul mate, and co-captain of 65 years, Alice Fleming Stultz daughter, Sara, and son Dan and his wife Alice Ann of Austin, TX. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren: Lisa Bleakley (Aaron), John, and James (Julie). The five great grandchildren were a constant joy in his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brothers. Rex graduated from Garland High School in 1938, where he was a multi-sport letterman. He graduated from East Texas State University in 1943 where he lettered in football, track and tennis. In 1942 he was the tailback and team captain of the Lone Star Conference Championship team and was selected Little All American Tailback. Rex served in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII and following his return, he taught math and coached at Crozier Tech High School from 1946-1956. He served as Assistant Administrator in DISD and retired in 1982 after 36 years of service. He officiated high-school and college football, kept score for SMU and Dallas Chaparral basketball teams, started track meets for 25 years including the Dallas Relays, and played tennis and golf into his 70s. He was active with the Crozier Tech Alumni Association, Highland Park UMC 2×2 class, and active in DISD’s Retired Administrators’ group. He was elected to the Garland Sports Hall of Fame and to the East Texas State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. “Baba” as he was known to the grandchildren will be missed for his sterling example of character that reflected his integrity, wise counsel, patience and gentle spirit. He reveled in the time spent with his teammates from the championship team of ’42, his tennis, golfing and officiating buddies. “Coach” told all who knew him, including “His Boys” from Crozier Tech, to always do their best. He lived his life by example of always doing his best. Whether you were an athlete or neighbor, the standard of always doing your best was his essence, expectation and spirit. Services will be held at Highland Park United Methodist Church Sanctuary, Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 2:00 pm. Reception will follow at the church.
