I think all of Uncle Allen's nieces and nephews recall the excitement as our parents and grandparents would prepare for his visits from California. A trip to the airport was a very big deal in the 60s. Those were the days when one would put on their Sunday best to go to the airport. Uncle Allen's visit always meant lots of food and family. Children would gather outside and visit with cousins while the Smith women would gather in the kitchen and soon the aroma of good old fashioned southern cooking would fill the air. I will always remember that even though he was very quite Uncle Allen loved to joke and he loved to laugh but mostly he desired the love of his family. As many years past I had the privilege of driving Uncle to visit his sister Anne. I discovered more about Uncle Allen in that 2 hour car trip that I ever known. I shared with him the memories I had of him as a child. I watched in the rear view mirror as a tear appeared in the corner of his eye. I felt his hand touch my shoulder and he said, "I never knew my family loved me so much". We salute you Uncle Allen for your service to our country and your love for friends and family.
