David Charles Garms' Obituary
David Charles Garms, 87, of Richardson, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at Methodist Richardson Medical Center. He was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and he will be deeply missed.
David was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on July 24, 1938, to Debs Garms and Jewell Hampton Goff Garms. As a boy, David spent summers living in different cities across the country, because of his fathers’ travels as a professional baseball player. However, his family always considered Texas to be their home. When his dad retired from baseball, their family settled in Somervell County, where, in 1956, David graduated from Glen Rose High School.
After high school graduation, David attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville for two years; then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin. After a year at UT, David completed his undergraduate studies at Texas Christian University, in Fort Worth. While at TCU, David met the love of his life, fellow student Judy Ann Morrison, of Walnut Springs. The couple were married on June 17, 1961, shortly after David received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and Math.
The young couple moved to Lake Jackson, Texas, where David began to work as a Research Chemist for Dow Chemical. After six years with Dow, David accepted a job with Collins Radio in Richardson, working initially in their Printed Circuit Board Group, before transferring to Hybrid Micro Electronics. David remained at the Richardson campus, which was purchased by Rockwell International in the early 1970s and then by Alcatel, in 1991. David accepted an offer of early retirement in 1993 but continued “working on contract” as the plant’s Safety Engineer. After six years of contract work, he retired completely, in 1999.
David was a voracious reader, with interests in history, economics, politics, and, most certainly, sports. His love of learning prompted him to pursue a Master of Liberal Arts Degree, which he earned in 1970, from Southern Methodist University. A devoted sports enthusiast, David loved the Boston Red Sox and, after enduring many heartbreaking seasons, he thoroughly enjoyed their World Series successes over the last twenty years!
Additionally, as a lifelong, diehard fan of TCU Horned Frog Athletics, especially football, David cherished the old Southwest Conference days, and more recently, celebrated the undefeated 2010 season and ultimately, the appearance of the Horned Frogs in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, following the 2022 season.
David loved playing softball, cards and dominoes and enjoying his impressive record collection. He was a man of strong faith, coming to know The Lord as a boy, and he spent many happy hours serving his church, driving the bus on Sundays and for many special occasions. These activities were deeply enriched by his heartfelt delight in traveling with
Judy, family and dear friends, astoundingly visiting all fifty states, close to forty different countries and four continents!
David is survived by Judy, his wife of 64 years, his daughter, Debra Garms of Garland, his son and daughter-in-law, Kennon and Shannon Garms, of McKinney, along with one granddaughter, Megan Garms, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, brothers-in law Garland Morrison and Harold Morrison of Walnut Springs, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of David’s life will be held at The Heights Church in Richardson on Wednesday, January 14th, at 1:30pm.
