David Bryant McKinnon's Obituary
David Bryant McKinnon (1934 - 2020)
David McKinnon passed away May 7th, 2020 on National Prayer Day. David was born in Edom, TX on March 20th,1934 to Philip and Gladys Giles McKinnon.
After David graduated from high school, he hitchhiked to Austin with one suitcase to attend UT. He always worked to pay his way. One of those summer jobs was at a Sun Oil Camp in Silver, TX. His future father-in-law, D.H. “Trit” Caldwell, was his boss. David lived in the bunkhouse and on weekends there were community dances. David asked Janet Caldwell to dance and they never looked back. David and Janet were married in 1954 and soon he was drafted and served his country in the U.S. Army. They were stationed in South Carolina where their daughter Sharon Lynn was born. Next, the family moved to Kingsville, TX where David attended Texas A&I. After four years, they moved to Dallas. David worked for Sun Oil Co. and earned his accounting degree at SMU. Their sons Mark and Scott were born at Baylor Hospital. David passed his CPA and formed McKinnon and Armstrong, later becoming McKinnon and Associates. He loved people, helping others, and was known as the great encourager. He was an active member of First Baptist Church Dallas, an exalted ruler of Elks, served on bank boards, and was an avid supporter of Criswell College.
He his preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Robert McKinnon. Survivors include; loving wife Janet McKinnon, daughter Sharon Lynn Tidwell and husband Andy, son Dr. Mark McKinnon and wife Ellen, and son Scott McKinnon and wife Laura. They have seven grandchildren; Andrea Bowen and husband Kris, Todd Tidwell and wife Laurie, Scott Tidwell; Krysta Marshall and husband Elliott; and David A, Clarice, and Monte McKinnon. There are four great-grandsons; Eli Bowen, and Tagg, Beau, and Wells Tidwell. David and Janet enjoyed traveling with the Elks, especially trips to Alaska and Ireland. Most Saturday nights, one could find them dancing at Dallas Elks Lodge and then Sunday mornings, attending church and active in the President’s Class. For 42 years, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays were celebrated at the McKinnon home with lots of delicious food prepared by Janet, laughter and loud talking. David never wasted a second - when you were talking with him, you had his full attention. He had a great sense of humor and his sayings were unlimited. David kept moving, working and helping others to the end. He loved Janet as much as a husband could love a wife. They were truly a team. He would want everyone to know that Jesus was the Lord of his life. We love him so very much and look forward to seeing him again. We will update this site when the celebration service is scheduled.
