Derek Ashley Bennett's Obituary
Derek Bennett, age 74, passed away on June 16, 2019, after a courageous struggle with complications of Type 1 Diabetes and Multiple Myeloma. He was born in San Antonio, TX, and raised in Dallas, graduating from Highland Park High School. He earned a BA degree in Marketing from Texas Tech, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. It was at Tech that he met Kay, his wife of almost 50 years. He worked for 23 years at Texas Instruments as a comptroller in the Defense Systems Equipment Group.Derek was preceded in death by his son, Gavin, and parents, Ruth and Wayne Bennett. He is survived by his wife, Kay, son, Brooks Bennett and wife Aly of Chesterfield, Missouri, grandsons Gavin, Brody, Nolan and Hudson Bennett, and sister, Deborah Bennett of Dallas, Texas.Some of Derek’s favorite times as a teenager and adult were spent in northern Minnesota on Burntside Lake, near the town of Ely. There he enjoyed fishing from a canoe in the Boundary Waters, steamy saunas followed by plunging into the cold lake waters, and listening to the cry of the loons at night. He was active with the dad’s group of Boy Scout Troop 82 as his son progressed to the rank of Eagle Scout. He liked firing up his Big Green Egg in the back yard for a good, juicy steak.A Celebration of Life will be held 12:30pm on Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Wildwood Chapel at Restland Memorial Park.The family wishes to give special thanks to his team of doctors for their care over the years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Diabetes Association, The Texas Oncology Foundation or your charity of choice.
