Dinh Quy Nguyen's Obituary
In Memoriam of My Big Brother Nguyễn Qúy Định
In his birth he brought peaceful relief to cultural expectation of my father Nghị and his family grandmother cụ Thụy and cô Kỷ. He also brought joyful tears to my mother Kính's eyes by being the first-born son, to a family who just immigrated from North Vietnam. His name comemorated the 1954 Geneva Peace Agreement that brought Peace and Freedom to South Vietnam.
In our childhood, my father had dreamed of a Peaceful scene of a place where our family settled by the riverbank.
Anh ĐỊNH tôi là một LỰC SĨ, THƯỜNG ra đứng bờ sông HƯƠNG GIANG.
My brother ĐỊNH was an athlete (LỰC SĨ) who frequently (Minh-THƯỜNG) meanders by the bank of the perfume (Minh-HƯƠNG) precious river (Châu-GIANG). An inspiration that dad transformed into his Award winning song: 'Hương Bình Lưu Luyến' or Reminiscence of a Peaceful Era by Ancient Emperial Capital City (Kim-Trinh representing the Huế City, keeper of the flame) by the Hương Giang riverside in 1960.
Most memoriable togetherness scenes of our childhood were fives of us took turns on the scooter. Before my time, it was Qúy-Định standing infront of dad who drove the Vespa with Châu-Giang, Minh-Hương, and Minh-Thường on the back. Then, it was Kim-Trinh standing infront of dad who drove the scooter with Mạnh-Sĩ, Sinh-Lực, and Qúy-Định on the back to visit grandma Thụy and big reunion of aunty Kỷ-uncle Sơn's family at uncle Thêm-aunty Mai's home in Gia-Định.
Our family resources were heavily invested in Định's education to fulfill my father inspiration for him to be the Broker of Peace in the settling formation of a new government in South Vietnam. My father's name Nghị when combined with his sons' names told the story of a diplomat negotiating for Peace and Freedom. Nghị-Định commemorated the 1954 Geneva Peace Agreement that delivered confident Nghị-Lực lawmaker Nghị-Sĩ in the capitol congress Nghị-Viện for forceful negotiation Nghị-Luận in strength.
He was a Freedom soldier of Peace who fought on the trench of the Việt Nam War, dodging bullets flying over his head. Fortunately, he came home just in times for retreat to a Peaceful land of the United States of America in 1975 where our family rebuilt our lives for a better future.
The images that ingrained to our minds were my father's cowlick, a widow peak and a hair swirl on my own forehead from my mother, my sister Trinh's eyebrows, the comfort of my mother's eyes. Those resemblances that Steven as a toddler waited outside of my room in early morning to play with me, because he thought I was his dad.
He survived by my sister Yến his wife and a chaplain son Steven who officiates and blesses his lost soul to his parents' open arms. Finally, my big brother anh Định tôi Rested In the Peace of the night by the riversides of my sisters Hương Giang and the keeper of the flame my sister Kim-Trinh. Amen.
