Dolly Gertrude Hoss' Obituary
Dolly Gertrude Hoss (née Hall), passed away peacefully on December 10, 2024, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 94. Dolly was born July 11, 1930 in Galena, Kansas to Carl Alva and Erma Belle (Prouty) Hall.
As a child, Dolly loved hearing her father talk about his work on The Wizard of Oz and other movie sets where he was a carpenter. Her father passed away when she was ten years old and she spent her later school years raised by her Uncle Richard and Aunt Tommie Prouty in Holyrood, Kansas. Soon after graduating from Holyrood High School, Dolly began nursing school at St. Rose School of Nursing in Great Bend, Kansas.
Dolly met the love of her life, Stephen F. Hoss, on a blind date to a friend’s wedding. They married on October 21, 1950 and enjoyed 57 years of marriage before his passing on February 28, 2008. Dolly and Steve shared a beautiful life together focused on family, faith, and travel. They raised their family in Kansas, Texas and Louisiana. Dolly and Steve moved back to Texas in 2001.
Dolly was busy raising seven children but somehow found the time to return to her nursing studies in her late 40’s. She received her nursing degree at the age of 49, and proudly became a licensed practical nurse after graduating with exceptional grades. She devoted her life to caring for others, bringing compassion and kindness to everyone she touched.
As a devout Catholic, Dolly’s faith guided her throughout her life. She loved reciting the rosary and found peace and joy in her daily prayers. Dolly’s family were comforted in knowing that Dolly spent a lot of her time praying for all of them. In fact, they lovingly referred to her as a “prayer machine.”
Dolly enjoyed many hobbies that reflected her creativity and care, including quilting, sewing, needlepoint, reading, baking, and gardening. Many of her friends and family received gifts she made throughout the years including her famous Grandma Dolly “blankies” and quilts as well as everyone’s favorite Grandma Dolly recipes. She also generously shared her time and talents to teach others the joy of sewing, gardening and baking.
Dolly enjoyed getting involved in activities and volunteering in her spare time. Dolly was active in her children’s lives and was a scout leader, room mother and wonderful volunteer. While living in Lafayette, Dolly was a member of the altar society at Holy Cross Catholic Parish. She, along with a friend, also volunteered with teenage mothers helping them learn to sew and care for their new babies in Lafayette. When she and Steve moved to the Dallas area in 2001, she became active at St. Jude Catholic Parish in Allen. As a new resident at Heritage Ranch in Fairview, Texas in 2001, Dolly started a sewing group, called the “Nifty Needles”.
Dolly was a loving mother to her seven children: Stephen Jr. (Katie), Peggy (Claudy Huard), Richard (Virginia), Christopher, Thomas, Michelle (Christophe Mazzini), and Shawn (Denise). Her family grew to include 15 beloved grandchildren: Steven III (Karyn), Christopher Dale, Christianne, Claude (Laura), Charles (Chelsea), Richard Jr., John Francis (Kellie), Randal (Christine), Anthony, Michael (Molly), Nicholas (Mary), Matthew, Rachel, Joshua (Frankee), and Emily.
Dolly’s joy multiplied with her 28 great-grandchildren: Hunter, Harley, Harmony, Hart, Korey, Claude, Maximillian, Julian, Friedrich, Suzette, Jacques, Nancy, Miriam, Philip, Miles, Kathleen, Joshua, Kaleb, Hadley, Hunter, Harper, Aida, Arlo, Cloie, Micah, Brie, Ashlyn, and Brayden. She was also blessed with one great-great-grandchild, Aria.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Carl and Erma, her siblings: Bill Hall, Richard Dan Hall, Faye Hall Jackman, Dixie Hall Randolph, and Kenneth Warren Hall, her husband, Stephen, and one son, Thomas.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either Catholic Charities of Dallas https://www.ccdallas.org/donate/ (mailing address: Catholic Charities Dallas 1421 W Mockingbird Ln, Dallas, TX 75247) or Austin Street Center https://austinstreet.org/donate/ (mailing address: Austin Street Center P.O.
