Don Owens' Obituary
Don Owens was born on April 26, 1929 in Terrell, Texas and entered the Lord’s presence on May 5, 2015. Preceded in death by his infant first-born son, and by his brother, Leon. Don is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 58 years; his daughter, Debbie; his son, David; his sister-in-law, Hazel Owens and her children, Janis, Janie and Bill and their families. Also survived by Carolyn’s sister, Mary Alice Jones and her husband, Bill; and sister-in-law, Betty Lohr; 3 nieces and 3 nephews. Don began working part-time in high school and took a full-time job at the Texas Bond Reporter after graduation, with no prospects of attending college for lack of finances. His employer urged him to go to college and continue working weekends and holidays. He commuted to Arlington and later transferred to SMU so that he could work longer hours at the Bond Reporter. His employer advanced him funds for tuition and books which he reimbursed through salary deductions. He was ever grateful for his employer’s generosity. After earning his degree, he worked in the insurance industry until his retirement in 1994. Eager to be active again, he soon began working part time at CAM International (now Camino Global) where he enjoyed serving the missionaries and staff for more than 15 years, finally retiring full time on his 84th birthday. Through the years Don served on various boards and committees at both Reinhardt Bible Church and Redeemer Bible Church, served with Prison Fellowship for 10 years, White Rock Center for Hope for 10 years, the Dallas East Camp of Gideons International, and worked many tax seasons in the AARP program assisting seniors with tax preparation. Don and Carolyn met at church in Wilmington, Delaware, while Don was stationed at New Castle Air Base as a 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force. Through the years the family made many trips to visit relatives in Maryland and in Canada. They also enjoyed trips throughout Texas and the southwest. As empty nesters, they traveled to Guatemala, the Pacific Northwest, California, and the Great Lakes area. Don’s fun-loving sense of humor was evident to all who knew him, including the nurses who cared for him in his final days. He was so appreciative of the many visits he received in the hospital and for all the loving care friends gave to family members caring for him. The visitation for Don Owens will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday, May 7, 2015 at Restland Funeral Home. The service for Don Owens will be held on Friday, May 8, 2015 at 12:30 PM at Redeemer Bible Church, 721 Easton Road, Dallas, TX 75218. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75238 at Restland Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Camino Global, 8625 La Prada Dr., Dallas, TX, or Redeemer Bible Church.
