Donald Rupurt Harris' Obituary
Our beloved father Donald R. Harris entered into God's Kingdom on Friday, December 8. 2023 after a recent health decline due to recurrent pneumonia. He was surrounded by family and passed peacefully into the hands of our lord.
Donald was born to Rupurt and Dorothy Harris on April 20, 1942 in Dallas, Texas. When Don was young, he enjoyed playing baseball, football and found his passion for golf. He attended St. Mark's School of Texas and graduated in 1961 earning the Headmaster's Cup. Golf was his lifelong passion, and he accepted a full ride to play on the golf team at Centenary College of Louisiana. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and earned his undergraduate degree from Centenary. Upon graduation he returned to Dallas to begin work in banking with Oak Cliff Savings and loan and then First Texas. Don pursued multiple careers in life, ultimately retiring from McKesson Corporation in 2011.
In 1972, Donald married Betty Cox, a match made in heaven. Don and Betty enjoyed traveling with friends before becoming parents to Darren and Allison and raising their family in Dallas. As a loyal servant to God, Don was a longtime member of Lover's Lane UMC where he volunteered with multiple ministries. He later joined First UMC Richardson until 2020 when he moved to Frisco, Texas.
Don was a humble and caring man who raised his family on Christian beliefs. He began his love for golf from a young age at Northwood Country Club playing as often as he could with a busy family life. Don shared his passion for golf by volunteering his time with the United States Golf Association. In 2013, he was honored with the Issac B. Grainger Award for over 25 years of dedicated volunteering with the USGA. In retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren who took up the same sport he loved as a child. He attended as many practices, games, plays, concerts, and recitals as he could. In his last days, he was overjoyed to learn of accomplishments on the "court" and "ring" that his beloved grandchildren had made.
Don joins Betty, his parents, his in-laws, and brother Doug Harris in Heaven. He is survived by his loving children Darren Harris of Frisco with wife Emily, and daughter Allison Harris Newman of San Antonio with husband Matt. Grandchildren whom he loved unconditionally, Dayne Harris, Ellie Harris, Kate Newman, and William Newman. Immediate family who loved Don dearly include his sister-in-law Carol Harris and nephews Dan Harris and wife Mary, Zach Harris and wife Dea. Robert Harris along with many extended family.
