Donald Ray Mighell's Obituary
Captain USNR (retired) Donald Ray Mighell, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away on May 4, 2016 in Terre Haute. We remember Don as a generous, giving soul who lived a life of service to family and friends alike in so many ways. We will dearly miss him. Don was born on November 7, 1934 in Englewood, Colorado to Richard Henry Mighell and Ruth Aline Mighell. He is survived by his brother Ken and wife Judy; brother Robert and wife Kay; nephew Tom and husband Kenny; nephew Bob and wife Suzy; niece Laura; and great-nephews/nieces Connor, Weston, Becca, and Cole, all of Dallas, Texas. Don dedicated his life to service – to his family, his community, his church and his country. Graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1956 with a zoology degree, Don joined the U.S. Navy, where he served in active duty until 1960. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1960-1984, retiring with the rank of Captain. Following his military service, Don returned to college, earning a Masters Degree in College Student Personnel from the University of Texas at Austin in 1965. He served as Associate Dean of Student Life at Indiana State University from 1965 until his retirement in 1999, helping to further the educational experiences of thousands of students. Don devoted much of his volunteer time as an alumni member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, serving in leadership positions at both the local and international levels, and receiving the Distinguished Fiji Award in 2000 for his unselfish service and special contributions to society at large. An Eagle Scout, Don served on the board of the Crossroads of America Council of the Boy Scouts of America, where he received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to the Council. Don also served in leadership positions with Kiwanis Club and Centenary United Methodist Church in Terre Haute. Don’s life of service has left a lasting effect on so many people, and we are all the better for having known and loved him. Graveside Service will take place at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Restland Memorial Park, Ascension Garden.
