Dr. Donald Duane Smith's Obituary
Dr. Donald Duane Smith passed away on November 5, 2018, at the age of 85, with all the love and support of his family.Dr. Smith fought a courageous battle with cancer over the last five years. The family would like to thank the devoted doctors at Medical City Hospital and Texas Oncology who treated him and enabled him to have more wonderful, quality years of memories with his family. In addition, the family appreciates the care and kindness of all of the staff at Walnut Place Assisted Living.Dr. Smith was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jason Walker Smith of Haskell, Texas along with his two older brothers Jason and Dr. Douglas Smith. He graduated from Haskell High School and then earned his Bachelor’s Degree from North Texas State University. He earned his D.D.S. in 1958 from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, Texas.He was a Captain in the United States Army, where he served and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He was active in the Texas and American Dental Association. After retiring from Dentistry, he enjoyed working in the accounting division at Park Place Lexus in Plano and Grapevine, Texas where he established several close friendships. He was a member of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church.In his younger years, he enjoyed golf and hunting quail in West Texas. He treasured the times at the lake with his family, especially fishing with his grandsons who adoringly called him “G-Daddy.” He also thoroughly enjoyed spending his time at the horse races. Dr. Smith is survived by his children: Donald Duane Smith, Jr. and Kelly Knight, Julianne (Smith) and Brad Matthys, beloved grandsons Stephen and Daniel Matthys. He is also survived by his former wife, Rosemary Spurlin.Visitation will be held at Restland Funeral Home (the Abbey Chapel), 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas, 75243 on Sunday November 11, 2018 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.Family graveside service to be set at a later date.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to:Disabled American Veterans National HeadquartersP.O.
