Donald Weigand's Obituary
WEIGAND, DONALD J. Beloved husband and father, Donald J. Weigand, 76, died Saturday, March 31, in Richardson with his family by his side. Born December 30, 1930, in San Antonio, Don will be remembered as much for his loving heart and generosity as his 50 years of success in the advertising business. He was a devout Catholic, a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dallas since 1973. He graduated from Central Catholic High School and attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. A patriot who loved his country, Don proudly served as a Sergeant Major in the Texas National Guard. He began his professional career in the outdoor advertising industry 50 years ago. Beginning as a lease man, he rose through the ranks to become known as ‘Mr. Outdoor.’ He worked for the giants of the industry, serving as outdoor division manager of Donrey Media Group, as Foster & Kleiser’s manager of Northern California and sales manager for Dallas-Fort Worth and with the Institute of Outdoor Advertising. Don formed his own company, Outdoor Advertising Sales and Service in 1978, handling millions of dollars of advertising for clients such as Borden’s, Phillip Morris, Southwest Airlines and 7-11. He represented outdoor companies from coast to coast including Clear Channel Outdoor, Viacom and the Lamar Company. Don was loved and respected in the advertising community. He was a much-sought-after speaker who often addressed numerous groups including the Dallas Ad League. In December 2006, he was honored by friends and coworkers at a retirement dinner hosted by Clear Channel Outdoor. Don also received a plaque commemorating his 50 years of service at the annual Christmas lunch held by the ‘Old Timers’ of Dallas advertising. Don was an active man who loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. As a young man, he enjoyed water skiing, tennis and rodeo. He was a skilled craftsman who loved working with wood. Don was a man who loved and was loved by all who knew him. He supported many charities but most of all gave of himself. He anonymously assisted many struggling students, bought groceries for strangers and gave many toys to needy children as Santa Claus. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Weigand and his mother and stepfather, Helen and Malcolm Henigan. Surviving him are his wife of 52 years Ellie and six children and their spouses: Donna and Dr. Joe Monk, Karen Kislingbury, Cindy and Greg Reinhardt, Tony and Susanne Weigand, Jim and LeNora Weigand, and John and Kayla Weigand. He has 14 grandchildren who were so special to Papa. He is also survived by a sister and brother- in-law, Joanne and Weldon Hardee as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. “Rest in peace. You will be dearly missed and never, ever forgotten.” The family will receive friends following a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at Restland Memorial Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Patrick Church, 9643 Ferndale Road, Dallas, TX.
