Josh and I went to visit Grandmother as she started to drift away. We spent a good amount of time with her as she tried to grasp all that was happening. We tried to talk with her and help understand who we were and how much we loved her. It wasn’t going at that well with confusion present on her face most of the visit. However, there was this only little spark. She was sitting there, looking into the ether, and I asked her “What are you thinking about, Grandmother?” Without missing a beat she turned to me, locked eyes, and, with a smile, said “You.”
It was this flash of her quick, charming self and it melted my heart. It was like she came up to the surface to give me one last smile. I’ll never forget it.
