Donna Kay ( Fincher) Stephens' Obituary
Donna Kay Fincher Stephens went to go dance with Jesus on July 15, 2021 in Denton, TX at the age of “29 and holding”, as she always said, which by chance was 72. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, July 22, 2021 in Restland Wildwood Chapel, with visitation one hour prior and interment following at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
Donna Kay was born on June 30, 1949 in Ennis, Texas to the late Edward Louis and Sarah Catherine (Haley) Fincher. She grew up in Dallas, TX with her loving sister Nona Diane and brother Stephen Louis and met and married the sweetheart of her lifetime, Curry Marcus Stephens, in her early 20s. They lived in various cities surrounding Dallas over the 40 plus years they were together. They developed a large circle of friends, were active in church, a civic organization, traveled, absolutely loved the Texas State Fair, and had a love for dogs and cats. Donna was also known for helping her mom with one the biggest garage sales in the Dallas area.
When Curry died in 2012, Donna moved to Pilot Point, TX to live with her niece. She began creating beautiful handmade cards for a military organization that distributed 500 of them overseas at Christmas. In 2013, with the assistance of her family, dear friends, and the residents of Denton State Supported Living Center, she began making Christmas cards for Meals on Wheels organizations in North Central Texas. In 2020, she made an gave an astounding 4,200 cards with the ability to use only one hand. Donna was the recipient of the Texas Department of Aging Services Vision Award for her volunteer work making the cards.
When she wasn’t working on cards, she loved going to Camp Summit, a barrier free camp for individuals with physical and mental challenges. Her favorite activities were flying through the air on the zip line in the ropes course, making arts and crafts, and swimming. In addition, she loved the Lord and her church family and served as a greeter. She also loved spending time with her dear friends at the Ability House, attending activities and dances at the ARC of Denton County, and valued time spent with friends and family. She also volunteered with the Area Agency on Aging of North Central Texas and spent hours helping prepare for health classes and health fairs for seniors.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and husband. Donna is survived by her sister Nona Diane Mathis and husband Mike Reynolds of Nocona, TX, Brother-in-law Steve Mathis of Krum, TX, sister-in-law Tami Fincher of Willis, TX, a niece Kim Mathis of Pilot Point, TX, a nephew Mike Mathis and wife Cindy of Krum, TX, a great-nephew Joel Kunze of Frisco, TX and a great-niece Jordyn Heckman of Douglas, WY and her precious dog Elvis and cat Priscilla.
Words her family and friends described her as: sweet and loving, kind, appreciative, easy-going, outgoing, jovial, artistic, giving, supportive, friendly, tenacious, resilient, angel from heaven, a light, and a smiling charm. The world was her family and she embraced everyone, encouraging them and expressing her love and joy for things great and small; she had a heart the size of Texas. She overcame multiple adversities in her life, but never let that get her down. It was a joy to be near her, and her memory has and will make us all better people.
