Doris Larrison Burck's Obituary
Doris Mae Larrison Burck
July 7, 1922 – February 26, 2023
Doris passed away in her home in Dallas, Texas, on February 26, 2023 at the age of 100. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 7, 1922, to Ira LaRue Larrison and Marrietta Nentrup Larrison. When asked about the secret of living to 100 she said, “Keep moving!” In 1934, Doris’ mother told her she had a surprise for her. She thought it was going to be a jelly donut but welcomed her little brother, Kenneth A Larrison, anyway. She attended Emmerich Manual High School in Indianapolis and graduated in 1940.
Doris married George A. Burck on October 25, 1941, in Indianapolis and they later moved for his work to Dallas, Texas in 1957. It was quite a shock; but they developed a deep affection for their new home. They raised three children and enjoyed a life of many social activities and traveling. George adoringly carried Doris “on a velvet pillow” and ultimately bought her the car she had always wanted, a Cadillac. It became her signature car. She pursued her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse by attending college in her 50’s and achieved her RN in 1975. As he approached retirement, George suddenly passed away in 1982 after 40 years of marriage. Doris later met and married Gordon C. Hill on October 22, 1984. They made the most of retirement life with more traveling, cruising and eating out (as Doris had retired from cooking). Every chance he got, Gordon told her children how much he loved their mother. Gordon passed away in 2008 after 23 years of marriage.
Doris’ greatest passion and legacy was her family. She was their biggest supporter, counselor, cheerleader and Chief Worrier. She was known to be independent, feisty, smart and strong willed and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her other passions over the years included golf, duplicate bridge, Frank Sinatra, The Tennis Channel, Texas A&M, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, crossword puzzles, and later in life, game shows. She lived life her way. She was a loving Matriarch and will be greatly missed by her family who loved her dearly.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, brother and husbands. She is survived by son Steve (Lynnette), son Gary (Diane) and daughter Barbara (HK Bain); grandchildren Mike (Julie), Brian (Leanne), Jennifer Kanode (Shane), Chris (Lindsay), Megan Bain and Tom Bain (Jessica Kovacs); and great grandchildren Charles, Natasha, Leila, Philip, Kai, Andrew, Kalli and Jack.
The family wishes to thank the aids and staff at Traditions who took care of her the last six years of her life and aids and nurses of Allstar Hospice who helped her the last few weeks.
Visitation will be held on Monday, March 13, 2023, from 9 – 11 am and the funeral service will immediately follow at 11 am both at the Abbey Chapel at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Avenue at Restland Road, Dallas, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, please do an act of kindness for an elderly family member, friend or neighbor or make a donation to a charity of your choice. Doris’ favorites included Special Olympics and Salvation Army.
