Doris Ernestine Clay's Obituary
Doris Ernestine Clay was born Doris Ernestine Loeb in New York, New York to Reverend Ralph Edward Loeb and Margaret Ernestine Loeb on January 13, 1931. She was the only child born to Reverend and First Lady Loeb. In September of 1957 she married Dr. Raymond Edward Clay a graduate of Meharry Medical School. The couple gave birth to two beautiful girls, named Deborah Susan and Wendy Cheryl Clay. Deborah was born in Cambridgeshire, England and Wendy was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey. Reverend and First Lady Loeb sent Doris to complete high school at the historic Hanes Normal Industrial Institute in Augusta, Georgia. Doris earned her high school diploma in May of 1948. Doris was the first in her family to attend college bringing tears to her father eyes when she graduated from Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology in 1952. Doris had a passion for the sciences and often participated in stimulating scientific discussions. After graduating she worked as laboratory assistant at Columbia University in New York. Shortly, after working at Columbia University, her college sweetheart who was in the Air Force stationed in the United Kingdom asked for her hand in marriage. Reverend Loeb was unable to attend but sent First Lady Loeb and Doris by ship to England. She was married and soon afterwards they gave birth to their first child, Deborah Susan Clay. When she returned home she and her husband were stationed at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, were their second child was born Wendy Cheryl Clay. Doris had a passion for education and children thus steering her in the direction to become a school teacher. She taught elementary school for more than 17 years inspiring youth to do something positive with their future. Her love for education motivated her to pursue a graduate degree from Trenton State College. Doris was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She relocated to Dallas, Texas to be closer to her mother and daughter Debbie. She joined Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in 2005 She loved her newly found church home. A devoted Christian since she was saved and baptized at 8 years old at Day Star Baptist Church, her father’s church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Edward Clay; her parents, Ralph Edward Loeb and Margaret Ernestine Loeb. She leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Deborah Nixon, Wendy Felton: four grandchildren Rhasheda Boyd, Reyhan Nixon, Clay Felton, Jonae’ Felton; two grandchildren-in-law, Dora Nixon and Jarvis Boyd; six great grandchildren, Devon Nixon, Deven Nixon, Deshaun Nixon, Jackson Boyd, London Boyd, Quinn Boyd; and a host of other relatives and friends. Service for Doris Clay will be held at 10:00 AM, June 17, 2017 at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with a visitation one hour prior. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243.
