Doris Lorita Cusic's Obituary
We are sad to announce the loss of our beloved mother, Doris Lorita Forney Cusic of 91 years, on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023. Doris passed away at her home in Dallas surrounded by her loved ones. She was born in Wichita, Kansas to James and Marguerite Forney on March 26th, 1932. She was preceded in death by Wendell Alvin Cusic, her loving husband of 49 years, and her younger brother Galen Forney. Doris is survived by her two younger sisters, Wendelene Skaggs of Oklahoma City, and Beverly Wharton of Altus, Oklahoma. Doris was mother of three loving children, sons Jim Cusic and wife Susan from Hawkins, Texas, and Tom Cusic and wife Phuong from Garland, Texas, and one daughter, Cindy Davis and husband Eddie from Issaquah, WA. Doris has seven grandchildren, April McGee, Dana Haisten, Hailey Flores, Brittany Clark, Jackson Davis, and Amy and John Nguyen. And six adorable great grandchildren, Grant, Ian, and Callan McGee, Paisley and Kinsley Haisten, and Beau Flores.
Doris and Wendell were married at the Huntoon and College Church of Christ in Topeka Kansas, on August 31st , 1951, where both of their fathers served as elders of the church. Later they moved to Dallas in 1962 and joined the Garland Road Church of Christ, where they were members for over twenty years. They were there anytime the doors were open with all three of us kids. Doris served as a Sunday School Teacher for many years while Wendell was a long-time deacon of the church. After his passing, she joined Saturn Road Church of Christ where her son Jim’s family also attended.
Doris worked for McShan’s Florist for 40 years where she made many close friends including members of the McShan Family.
Doris was an avid hobbyist, enjoying quilting, embroidery, crocheting, and knitting. In 2009, one of her quilts won first place at the State Fair of Texas. She also dabbled in writing poetry which included the McShan’s annual Christmas poem that included many of her coworkers. She loved being around all of the flowers at McShan’s and that love of flowers spilled over to her gardening at home. She loved the flowers she grew. In fact she was such a good gardener she could make dirt grow.
Doris was also an avid reader of historical fiction about women of other cultures, learning how these women dealt with overwhelming hardships with strength, love, and conviction.
Our mother was a gentle person with a deep capacity for love and empathy. She was always cheerfully caring for others. And she could always make us all chuckle with her well known witty humor. She was an extraordinary woman and role model to us all and we will be forever indebted to her.
