Doris James, beloved mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, and esteemed doctor of pathology, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, surrounded by friends and family. Born on April 14, 1929, in Giddings, Texas, she was the cherished daughter of Hulda Ernestine Wenke and Alvin Robert Schatte.
Doris devoted her life to science and healing as a respected pathologist. Her work reflected a profound curiosity and a lifelong commitment to understanding the world around her. Outside of her professional accomplishments, Doris found deep joy in the pursuits that nurtured her inquisitive mind and generous spirit. She loved gardening, reading, collecting unique treasures, and immersing herself in history—one of her greatest passions. She took immense pleasure in sharing stories, historical insights, and her expansive knowledge with others, enriching every conversation with her thoughtful perspective.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Sliva; her son, Johnathan James; and her brother, Bill Schatte. Doris is also survived by her grandchildren, Holly Braxton, Lawrence Sliva, and Brandi Connors; and her great‑grandchildren, Dax and Zia Braxton, and Kai Connors.
Doris was preceded in death by her beloved son, Gifford A. James Jr., as well as her siblings Pearl Schatte, Gloria Farrand James, Ruth Woodward, Frank Schatte, and Alvin Schatte.
Doris will be remembered for her intellect, warmth, and the boundless curiosity that shaped her remarkable life. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved her and in the many lives she touched through her work, her wisdom, and her presence.
